Double Shell Tank Lead Engineer (Environmental Engineer 5)

The Nuclear Waste Program is looking to fill a Double Shell Tank Lead Engineer (Environmental Engineer 5) position. The position will be located in our Richland Field Office (RFO) in Richland, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station. 

In this role, you will focus on evaluating the various technologies that the Department of Energy will be proposing to use in the treatment of high level radioactive waste on the Hanford Site. You will also be involved in evaluating the WA State Dangerous Waste Permit application from the Department of Energy to determine if the specification in the application meet the WA State Dangerous Waste regulations. The work will be challenging and rewarding in helping to clean up the most polluted site in the United States.

Program Mission: The Nuclear Waste Program's mission is to lead the effective and efficient cleanup of the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site, ensure sound management of mixed hazardous wastes in Washington, and protect the state's air, water, and land at and adjacent to the Hanford site.

During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. This position is eligible to telework 90% of the time. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing.

Duties

The Hanford Site has a long history of developing nuclear weapons which resulted in the storage of waste in underground storage tanks. There are 149 Single Shell Tanks and 28 Double Shell Tanks that have an approximate capacity of 1 million gallons each. The Waste Treatment Plant where much of the waste will be vitrified is under construction. In this role, you will be involved in evaluating various engineering processes to determine if the process would be able to treat the waste and if the operation of the process would meet with the regulation requirements.

Qualifications

Option 1: An Engineer-In-Training Certificate or a Bachelor's degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, civil, geotechnical, water resources, environmental, chemical, mechanical or related field AND Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington AND five years of experience in environmental engineering.

Option 2: A Master's degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, civil, geotechnical, water resources, environmental, chemical, mechanical or related field AND Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington AND four years of experience in environmental engineering.

Option 3: A Ph.D. degree with major study in one of the following engineering fields sanitary, civil, geotechnical, water resources, environmental, chemical, mechanical or related field AND Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington AND three years of experience in environmental engineering.

NOTE: Requirements for professional registration as an engineer in the state of Washington are eight years of professional experience (which may include up to four years of college-level engineering education) and successful completion of sixteen hours of professional licensing exams. Applicants qualifying through the licensing equivalency option must achieve professional registration as an engineer in the state of Washington within six months of appointment to this class.
