What do Systems / Mechanical / Aerospace Engineering and Physics Interns do?

As a Systems, Mechanical, or Aerospace Intern, you will work with a multidisciplinary team of experienced engineers on the development of a complex ground, airborne, or shipboard electronic system. Working with a mentor, our interns participate in projects performing research, analysis, synthesis of data, trade studies, requirements development, concept of operations, prototyping, and risk reductions.

Some potential responsibilities may include:
  • Identify operational or technical gaps in current systems and recommend mitigations for fielded or new systems in development
  • Identify opportunities to apply emerging technology to the current domain
  • Develop and present prototypes and system models to help customers frame emerging technology trends to increase affordability, efficiency, and effectiveness
  • Engage in system concept development, requirements engineering, system architecture development and evaluation, and test strategy development
  • Use modeling and simulation tools to independently assess performance of techniques and architectures
  • Present technical recommendations to government program office customers

What are some examples of projects?

  • Applying modeling and simulation techniques to ensure our national emergency systems are ready to respond when needed
  • Modeled the mechanical properties of a military communication system to understand its structural performance under vibration loads
  • Modeled the thermal performance for a new MITRE-designed antenna prototype that is 3D printed in our Fabrication Lab  
  • Analyzed multiple design alternatives for an aircraft communication system to ensure size and weight requirements were feasible
  • Creating UML models to study how services provided to our veterans can be improved
  • Running cost models to determine the level of effort of migrating to a cloud. Then, aiding government organizations to move from their aging data centers to highly available cloud infrastructure

What knowledge, skills and attributes does MITRE look for in students that they hire for Systems / Mechanical / Aerospace Engineering and Physics Intern positions?

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics or similar field. In some cases, high school students may be considered
  • Systems Modeling Language (SysML) and/or Unified Modeling Language (UML)
  • Experience with Digital Engineering
  • Experience with Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
  • Science & Technology (S&T) capability assessments, trade studies, and analysis of alternatives
  • Sustained excellence in academic performance
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrates the characteristics of a continuous learner
  • Desire to help our nation solve its most critical problems

  • Clearance: Hiring requisitions for some roles may require a U.S. Government Security clearance.
  • Salary: The salary below is the starting range for incoming freshman undergraduate students. Intern salaries are based on how much of their degree program a student has completed, experience as well as additional factors.

Salary compensation range and midpoint:
$27,000 - $34,000 - $40,500 Annual
