Electrical Engineer

Overview: 
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer who will directly support the design, operations, maintenance, and construction of electrical systems across the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), Chestnut Ridge Campus facilities, and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). As an Electrical Engineer you will support work on electrical equipment ranging from medium-voltage distribution equipment, low-voltage distribution, industrial and laboratory equipment, and communications including fiber optic and controls. This position resides in the Electrical Engineering (EE) Group in the Neutron Technologies Division, under the Neutron Science Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The EE Group is responsible for design, construction, operations, and maintenance of building and technical systems that enable the accomplishment of ORNL’s science missions.
 
This position reports to the Group Leader for Electrical Engineering within the Site Services Section.
 
Major Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Develop technical design documents including drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for new construction, facility modifications and improvements. 
  • Coordinate with operations and engineering staff to ensure reliable operation of electrical equipment.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance procedures for electrical equipment.
  • Plan and perform inspections and oversight for preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate planned power outages with operations and research staff to support maintenance and installation activities.
  • Recommend and design improvements to existing electrical infrastructure to enhance system reliability.
  • Support/Perform procurement of equipment and services including developing technical specifications and reviewing submittals.
  • Work closely with electrical designers to produce designs for facility upgrades.
  • Provide sketches and drawings in CAD, using AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Interface with other disciplines during the design process to ensure constructability and operability of integrated systems.
  • Review designs produced by subcontractor Architect/Engineer (A/E) firms.
  • Oversee and periodically inspect installations to ensure they meet design criteria and applicable codes and standards.
  • Maintain existing arc flash analyses through data collection, preparation of SKM models, reports, and printing equipment labels.
  • Provide technical field support for installation and maintenance activities.
  • Provide technical input to support troubleshooting and repair of electrical equipment including motors, variable frequency drives, electrical distribution, transfer, and protection equipment.
  • Comply with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics.
 
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related discipline with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in design, facility operation, and/or maintenance of complex electrical power systems.
  • Ability to fulfill requirements to obtain a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD/Revit.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to manage project schedules, scopes, and budgets.
  • Ability to work in an operating facility to diagnose and trouble-shoot electrical systems.
  • An active Professional Engineer license in Tennessee.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
 
Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
