Intern - Engine Overhaul Engineer (Summer 2023)

As an intern you are part of the United team, you'll learn everything you need to take your career higher by working alongside engineering and technical specialists. We are hiring interns for spring and summer in the following areas and based on your degree program you can interview for opportunities in one of many teams

Highlights of teams below:

Avionics engineering is responsible for maintaining aircraft avionics systems reliability and improve functionality, as well as providing support to our internal customers safely and efficiently. Responsible subject matter includes communications, navigation, autopilot, indication, and recording systems.
Structures engineering is responsible for maintaining and modifying the physical aircraft structure (fuselage, wings, empennage, windows, doors, etc.) to prevent corrosion and fatigue related issues. Structures develops technical instructions to accomplish inspections, repairs, and modifications as needed to support regulatory, as well as business requirements.
Powerplant provides guidance of United’s engine, APU (AUXILIARY POWER UNIT) and thrust reverser programs making sure these programs are maintained to industry leading standards. As part of this the team works closely with airplane, engine and APU (AUXILIARY POWER UNIT) manufacturers, repair facilities, and front-line technicians' evaluating, develop and implement corrective actions when required.
Systems engineering is responsible for maintaining a variety of aircraft internal systems. Develop programs and author paperwork to improve reliability and maintain safety of the numerous ATA (Air Transport Association) chapters assigned to the team
Interiors engineering team works to maintain cabins on United aircraft. You might be assigned to work on a variety of interior projects, including seats, lavatories, oxygen systems, galleys, life rafts as well as supporting larger modifications that are taking place with our marketing teams. You will support both reliabilities, regulatory as well as reviewing designs with vendor companies to incorporate new products within the cabin. You provide engineering support for repairs and modifications of aircraft in overhaul.
Cabin Systems engineering is responsible for the maintenance and modification of the electrical systems inside the passenger cabin. We provide support and engineering services for lighting, in seat power, cabin communication, seat back entertainment, and Cabin WIFI. We work closely with internal United customers as well as external suppliers to improve reliability and implement new features.
Line and Base engineering support our daily operations, you would be partnered to work at one of our hubs and support an engineer who works with daily out of service events. Structures experience and repairs are a huge part of this daily event.
Maintenance Programs engineering maintains a compliant, reliable, and cost- efficient maintenance program to support operations. Ensure that the program follows all regulatory requirements, including the Boeing MPD (Maintenance Planning Document) Section 9/Airbus ALS Requirements. Develop maintenance program analysis, generate, and complete changes request documentation for the fleet.

Key Responsibilities could include:

  • Provide aircraft engineering support to line and check aircraft
  • Review, evaluate, and resolve next steps on manufacturer bulletins, management requests and regulatory requirements on United Airlines Airbus/Boeing aircraft
  • Prepare cost analysis on projects
  • Investigate and provide decisions for non-conformances resulting from in-service failures or maintenance incidents

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Must be pursing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
  • Must have a minimum of 12 semester hours in core degree course work
  • Individual should be a rising junior (at minimum) when internship begins
  • Program can be co-op or internship
  • If needed, United will provide air transportation to/from internship location during the term of employment for any scheduled meeting
  • Work related travel may be required, individuals must be able to travel without any restrictions
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the US for any employer without sponsorship
