Key Roles
This position is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the Reliability & Technical Services Group that directs transmission asset maintenance activities based on predictive maintenance tests. This position is the maintenance liaison to Engineering by providing project management support and by providing engineering with equipment specification advice. It works closely with member systems to address their system reliability concerns and issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manages various projects to ensure they are completed on schedule and within budget guidelines by planning and coordinating workflow within team and ensuring sufficient resources and training necessary to perform assigned work.
  • Responsible for working with substation and line engineering groups to advise and recommend substation and line equipment.
  • Meets regularly with member systems to discuss system reliability issues and concerns.
  • Responsible for working with Supply Chain on substation and line products and inventory levels.
  • Works with substation, line and reliability engineers, service technicians, and manufacturers to resolve transmission system equipment reliability issues in a timely manner and to adjust design specifications or maintenance practices to improve future reliability performance.
  • Works with Service Center Supervisors to schedule and monitor progress for activities of the maintenance & diagnostic technology experts in support of condition-monitoring technology applications for all Service Centers.
  • Organizes and participates in a substation and line predictive maintenance peer group comprised of service center line and substation foremen and maintenance reliability engineers.
  • Manages reliability engineers at EKPC on each diagnostic monitoring technology to provide high-level equipment condition assessment for the service centers and personally act as the expert on several of these technologies. Determines conditions that warrant the use of outside experts and coordinates these activities. Continues condition-based assessments for all substation equipment.
  • Develops and standardizes an equipment condition assessment report across the system. Builds a knowledge base of equipment case histories to help automate future maintenance decision-making. 
  • Investigates new maintenance and diagnostic technologies applications that will allow for O&M cost reduction and increased system reliability. Collects, analyzes and reports on predictive maintenance program benefits/impact. 
  • Stays abreast of new developments in relevant engineering applications and all applicable governmental agency rules and regulations.
  • Coordinates and oversees the activities of various engineering consultants retained to supplement EKPC staff.
  • Coordinates and oversees the NERC compliance activities related to Power Delivery Maintenance, currently including PRC-005, PRC-008, PRC-018 and FAC-003.
  • Presents, on an as needed basis, technical programs and presentations for varied audiences.
  • Oversees and evaluates system issues related to reliability during system disturbances.
  • Coordinates the performance management process for team members and provides performance feedback for the goal of maximizing performance.
  • Provides leadership and maintains overall authority and accountability for the team.
  • Works with key business units to develop and implement strategies that balance performance, cost, and risk related to life cycle management of EKPC line and substation assets.

Key Requirements
Education:  Bachelor's degree in engineering.  Additional specialized training in power system engineering preferred. Professional Engineer's License preferred.

Experience:  Seven (7) years of related experience. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a related area working in a leadership capacity is preferred. Experience in system protection area, design of transmission substations and similar facilities preferred.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Complete Supervisory Training Program within two (2) years and attend on-going Learning for Leaders training.
  • Must be able to read interpret, and prepare system and schematic diagrams and engineering drawings.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Microcomputer and project management skills required.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills required.
  • Must possess familiarity with key predictive maintenance program elements such as performance metrics, technology applications, financial management, and self-assessment techniques.

Working Conditions
  • Usual office conditions apply to this position with some field work at substation sites required. 
  • Occasional lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Some travel within the system and occasional out-of-state, which may be overnight.
