R&D Laser Engineering Intern

Lumentum’s Commercial Lasers R&D Organization is seeking an R&D Laser Engineering intern to work with multi-functional teams developing industry laser products. They will be working closely with other members of our small interdisciplinary BU Engineering team developing kilowatt class industrial laser systems. The candidate must be a fast learner, strong problem solver, and outstanding communicator. They must have a validated ability to understand problems and requirements as described by managers, and scientific and engineering staff.  The candidate for this position should have deep, meaningful experience with many of the specific skill areas listed, as well as a strong curiosity about growth and learning in all of them. 

Responsibilities include:
  • Evaluate laser performance at the component and system integration levels via both modeling and experimental methods. 
  • Understand physics for the issues observed in prototype validation. Able to drive the problem solving with help from supervisor and project lead
  • Improve and optimize the design laser optical architecture for industry laser and components including high power fiber laser, ultrafast fiber laser and related components
  • Analyzes and presents test data.  Discusses results with technical staff, external partners, and customers. 
  • Able to lead company’s technical team and defines task for them

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Qualified candidates will be enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in Physics, Optics, Engineering or a related major with a deep understanding of lasers. Students must be returning to school following the internship.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on lab skills in laser building, testing and characterization
  • Excellent ability to work in multi-functional teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with ultrafast laser and nonlinear optics is helpful
  • Proficient with optical simulation tool like ZEMAX/optiwave/lumerical/comsol
  • Proficient with data processing tooling like Matlab/Python/JMP etc
  • Experience with design for manufacturability, serviceability and cost reduction will be a plus
