Electric Engineering Employment Opportunities

Electric Field Engineering
To evaluate, design, estimate, and project manage the maintenance and construction of electric distribution systems. Design and manage all projects in accordance with applicable requirements, standards, and codes, ensuring safe, reliable service to customers in an efficient, economical manner. Prepare detailed drawings, permits, easements, material estimates and reservations, and all other documents required for project completion. Communicate effectively with all major stakeholders including Operations, Engineering Records, Electric System Planning, Budget Analysts, and customers.

Substation Engineer
Planned, estimated, designed, and manage complex electric Substation projects according to Company Standards, sound engineering practices, and applicable codes. Prepare detailed drawings, permits, easements, bid specifications, material and labor estimates, material reservations, and all other documents required for project completion. Manage projects to completion and provide engineering direction. Provide technical support for the operations of all Company and customer Substations. Research, specify, order, and coordinate material purchases and establish stocking levels of major transmission line electrical equipment. Verify Substation Department’s methods and procedures are kept current with the latest and best industry safety requirements and engineering practices and codes. Receives input from Operations groups on the performance of existing engineered facilities and systems. Evaluates, improve, and budget future designs. Works internally with Transmission Planning, Transmission Substation Engineering, Transmission Operations, Distribution Engineering and Operations, Technical Services, Substation Operations, Plant Operations, Major Accounts, and Construction regarding the installation and maintenance of new and existing substation facilities.

Interfaces and works with various interconnected companies, utilities, and entities such as INDOT, REMC, FERC, NERC, RFC, IURC, and Midwest ISO where appropriate.

Electric Transmission & Distribution Project Engineer
The Electric T&D Project Engineer is responsible for inspecting engineering project deliverables, driving continuous improvement, and improving overall engineering quality through the duties and responsibilities listed below. The Electric T&D Project Engineer develops long-term project deliverable schedules for the Electric T&D engineering project portfolio and then coordinates project reviews with internal or external engineers to ensure the project portfolio is completed efficiently and successfully.  The engineer improves overall Engineering quality by reviewing internal and contractor engineering deliverables to verify they have been performed in accordance with existing Standard Project Planning Packages (SP3s), standards, guides, and processes. The Engineer contributes to the engineering Quality Management System (QMS) by incorporating all lessons learned as part of the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle of continuous improvement.

Electric Transmission Line Engineer
This position will contribute to the Electric Line Engineering team in the design and management of the current plans to modernize our electric transmission and distribution infrastructure.  The incumbent will provide technical expertise to solve complex problems and apply leadership skills to project management, as well as offer quality oversight of work in electric T&D line design. Incumbents are expected to have advanced engineering skills and to have the ability to work independently. This position will demonstrate sound collaboration with company personnel and peer departments, with timely technical input and economic evaluations; to assure safe, reliable, and technically balanced solutions to deliver power.

Transmission Resource Engineer
The Transmission Resource Engineer position is responsible for performing power system analysis using power flow, transient stability, voltage stability & steady-state analysis software, including PSSE, GE / OSI Energy Management System (EMS), Powertech DSA, and others. This includes performing ad-hoc, 150-Day, 60-Day, and 14-Day-ahead power flow studies and developing appropriate mitigation actions to ensure system reliability. The role is responsible for outage coordination functions with internal and external stakeholders, maintaining the EMS network model used in Transmission Operations, and supporting NERC Compliance tasks for the Operations Planning department.

Real-Time Operations Engineer/Specialist
The Real-Time Operations Engineer/Specialist position is responsible for providing direct engineering support to real-time Transmission Operations. This includes the review of anticipated system conditions, the use of various analytical tools to perform power system analysis, and develop appropriate responses and mitigation actions to these system conditions. This is a 24-by-7 rotating shift position, with the additional purpose of monitoring Energy Management System (EMS) network analysis tools performance and resolving any problems that impact state estimator solution or availability. The role also supports NERC Compliance tasks for the Operations Planning department.

Electric System Protection Engineer
Analyze, design, and monitor electrical protection and control systems for transmission, generation, and distribution equipment to ensure optimum operational security, safety, reliability, and overall system integrity which minimizes the probability of system outages and ultimately preserves the delivery of electrical energy to customers.

Transmission Planning Engineer
The transmission Planning Department is responsible for the performance analysis and the future development and expansion of the NIPSCO bulk electric power system ranging in voltage level from 765kV to 34.5kV.

Electric Distribution Planning Engineer
Provides electric system analysis, technical guidance, and project and operational recommendations for electric distribution system development, reliability, and capacity planning utilizing electric system models, system knowledge, and engineering principles. Perform engineering analyses of NIPSCOs electric distribution systems to evaluate performance and provide a basis for subsequent plans to address mitigation of future operating deficiencies or to address the accommodation of trending load growth patterns. In response to engineering analyses and/or observed field data, develop actionable plans and prioritize system improvement projects to address reliability concerns and customer growth. The engineer will be expected to execute measurable results in electric distribution system analysis to support system reliability and safety, new business growth, peak system demand preparedness, infrastructure replacement, integration of distributed generation, smart grid, and long-range project planning, to ensure the Company’s long-term strategic operational and financial goals are realized. Collaboration is essential with key stakeholders across NIPSCO. The position will actively collaborate/participate with Substation Engineering, Transmission Line Engineering, ESSO, Substation Operations, Line Operations, Construction Dept., Asset Management, Major Customer Accounts, Real Estate, Regulatory, Major Projects, Financial and Budget groups in developing and implementing NIPSCOs short- and long-term system capacity, reliability, safety, and strategic asset renewal plans.

Communications & Control Engineer
This position is responsible for the initial design, installation, testing, and maintenance of the communication and SCADA control systems that monitor, control, and protect the capital investment that has been made in the NIPSCO gas and electric transmission, distribution, and hydroelectric generation and lake level control infrastructure. Performs communication and SCADA system troubleshooting and problem correction. Works with other Gas and Electric departments to coordinate outages, design, build and commission new substations, communications systems, and energy management control systems. Work Schedules can include extended hours or overnight stays out of the area. Personnel is subject to 24/7 emergency callouts.

Power Equipment Engineer
Responsible for the design, installation, testing, and maintenance of EHV and HV substation power equipment in the Company's electric transmission and distribution substations. Provides engineering support on-site and directs various operating, maintenance, and construction personnel to ensure that all substation power systems are installed, tested, and operate properly. Maintains, inspects, and troubleshoots power transformers, circuit breakers, reclosers, batteries, chargers, and monitoring equipment used on the electric system. Investigates and provide solutions to field problems with power equipment at company-owned substations or customer facilities. Designs and installs power equipment-monitoring systems. Assists in planning and prioritizing substation maintenance. Provides technical assistance and engineering services to various departments within the company as well as industrial, commercial, and residential customers.

Required Qualifications for all Gas Engineering Roles:
