The mission of the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) is to protect and preserve South Dakota's agriculture, environment, and natural resources. The successful applicant will be a member of the Inspection, Compliance, & Remediation Program's storage tank section in DANR. What you will do:
As part of the storage tank section, you will play an important role in implementing state and federal regulatory policies governing groundwater protection and cleanup related to storage tank facilities to protect human health and the environment. This position will perform tank inspections, release assessment and remediation, and conduct engineering evaluations of plans and specifications for aboveground and underground storage tank systems to determine if the plans and specifications are designed in accordance with industry and state standards.
Based on the applicant's knowledge, skills, abilities, and work experience, this position may be hired as Engineer I, Engineer II, or an Engineer III at the appropriate salary for the engineering level hired. Duties may include the following:
  • conducting site inspections to verify facility compliance with underground and aboveground storage tank rules;
  • assisting with underground and aboveground storage tank systems plans and specifications review;
  • providing technical and regulatory assistance to tank owners and operators, contractors, consultants, and the general public;
  • conducting engineering reviews of environmental assessment and corrective action reports for assigned contamination cases to determine their adequacy to meet cleanup requirements and to determine compliance with state rules and procedures;
  • conducting contamination compliant investigations to determine validity and recommend corrective actions where necessary;
  • providing technical information and assistance to colleagues, other state and federal agencies, and members of the public with customer service being a high priority.
This position requires a valid driver's license, frequent travel, and occasional overnight travel. Field work can occur in a wide range of weather conditions and may occasionally require the ability to lift of up to 50 pounds. Office work will be conducted in a routine office setting. Normal work hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; however, fieldwork may result in flexing the work schedule. This position will be trained in the Incident Command System and will be available to work in South Dakota's Emergency Operations Center during times when the Governor declares an emergency.

Licenses and Certifications:
DANR values professional licensure. Preference will be given to candidates that have successfully passed the Engineer-In-Training/Fundamentals of Engineering exam or have the ability to obtain a license. We can provide training and experience that will allow you to pursue your Professional Engineering license.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Only applicants that possess a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental, geological, civil, or related engineering field will be considered. Communicating and coordinating with other engineers and scientists, other agencies, and the public is required; therefore, good communication skills are essential.
We are looking for candidates that have:
  • knowledge of principals of environmental and natural resources engineering;
  • knowledge of principles and procedures of the environmental control and natural resources fields;
  • computer skills such as Microsoft Office;
  • knowledge of geographic information system (GIS) software;
  • ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing;
  • ability to set goals and work independently or in a team setting to achieve them;
  • ability to walk to sites carrying equipment over uneven or rough terrain;
  • ability to wear personal protection equipment and participate in medical monitoring program; 
  • skill to organize and present technical information to professional staff and to citizens of the state in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
