Landscape Architecture Summer Worker

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is now accepting applications for exciting Landscape Architecture/Landscape Design professional engineering paid internship roles (Summer Worker) within the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Division of Highway Design, Landscape Design Unit, located at our Headquarters in Newington, CT.

The mission of the Connecticut Department of Transportation is to provide a safe and efficient intermodal transportation network that improves the quality of life and promotes economic vitality for the State and the region.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS


The Landscape Design Unit plays an important role in the development of context sensitive transportation projects throughout Connecticut. Interns will be working in a hybrid capacity with both on-site work duties and some remote work.

Summer interns will participate in the design of the landscape components of transportation-related projects. Duties will include developing planting designs, specifications, and construction details for contract plans and assisting in other project development and management tasks. Interns will interact with Environmental Planners, Highway and Bridge designers, and Civil Engineers. Interns will work under the supervision of licensed landscape architects and gain exposure to the Connecticut DOT's project development and implementation process. Computer applications used may include MicroStation, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and other applications.

Positions are full-time, 8 hours per day, and are temporary. These positions are not eligible for benefits or paid holidays. Positions are anticipated to start in May of 2023. A valid drivers license is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of assigned specialty; knowledge in operation of equipment, materials and activities of assigned specialty; knowledge to degree necessary for dealing with and understanding client behavior; interpersonal skills; skill in techniques of assigned specialty; ability to assist clients in self-care habits, personal hygiene and proper social conduct where applicable; ability to understand and carry out written orders and oral instructions; adequate physical strength and stamina to perform duties; some positions may require supervisory and/or leadership abilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enrolled in, or graduated from, a Bachelor’s or Master's degree program in Landscape Architecture
  • Training or coursework in native plant communities and ecosystems
  • Training or coursework in plant identification
  • Training or coursework related to CAD and visualization software
