The State of Connecticut, Department of Consumer Protection (DCP), is now accepting applications for an exciting Accounting Careers Trainee (ACT) opportunity in Hartford, CT! This position has a target class, or build in promotion of Accounts Examiner when a successful training period is completed.

The Accounting Careers Trainee will perform the following duties: 
  • Assist in the audits of the two Native American Casinos in the state.
  • Complete detailed audits of system-generated slot tickets and promotions that use slot machines to award promotional credits (Free Slot Play, eBonus, etc.).
  • Perform periodic auditing of the support documentation regarding deductions from the gross slot machine win.
  • Reconcile primary and secondary jackpot deductions from the gross slot machine win, claimed as a Wide-Area Progressive Network (WAPN) participant, to jackpots reported by the third party WAPN operator.
  • Conduct initial reviews of applications for licensing and license renewal, with emphasis on the review of all financial information, including tax returns, submitted as part of the applications, to determine whether there are any inconsistencies or apparent omissions with the information provided.  
The Program: 
As an ACT you will be a part of a 1 or 2 year training program depending on your level of education. 

The length of the training program is 2 years for individuals with a Bachelor's degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting. 

The length of the training program is 1 year for individuals with a Master's degree in accounting or a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting. The length of the training program for an individual who earns a Master's degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting while assigned to this classification is 1 year from the date the Master's degree is conferred or the end of the original 2 year training period, whichever comes first.

Position Highlights:

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work for development of skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position; performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period; examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines or accepted accounting principles; may receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices; knowledge of business mathematics and statistics; some knowledge of business uses of information technology; some knowledge of effective report writing; ability to read and understand written materials; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Bachelor's or Master's degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel functions including tables, formatting, data manipulation and pivot tables.
  • Experience analyzing financial statements and data.
  • Experience applying State and Federal tax laws, statutes, and regulations.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and Word for auditing.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word to communicate in writing.
