Braun Intertec

Field Technician

May - November 2023 • Duluth, MN

What I liked

I mostly enjoy the relevant experience I got working with Braun; there was also a lot of freedom, good hours, and great people to work with.

What I wish was different

Although you get good hours, your schedule has to be flexible; it's nothing Braun can control but it's something to be aware of. As a geologist, I would have liked more experience with the environment side of things.

Advice

Be sure to talk to people! Braun employees can help you learn more than just the job, and even project contractors are knowledgeable.

What I liked

I was doing new project everyday and every project is different than other so it gave me real world experience of civil engineering field. I have been to construction site on weekly basis and watched the various geotechnical testing that were going on sites.

What I wish was different

If I had a chance of meeting with clients so it should have enhance my management skills. Except for this I do not want anything more from this job it was all according to the job description.

Advice

Keep in touch with staff and ask questions to manager if you have any problem. Keep learning company policies as well.

Construction Inspector Intern

May - November 2019 • La Crosse, WI

What I liked

I like the variety of jobs that I went to. This included doing different jobs like testing concrete, testing soil for compaction, and geopiers.

What I wish was different

In the beginning of the summer, there was not a lot of hours. The schedule is the job is erratic and hard to keep a proper sleep schedule.

Advice

If you don't mind working day to day, and what I mean by day today is not knowing what you're going to do tomorrow until 5pm, and you'll probably be fine.

Construction Materials Tester

May 2019 • Bloomington, MN

What I liked

I enjoyed the independence of getting to work on my own and problem solve on construction sites. Getting to work one and on with inspectors on site and being able to solve a problem is very rewarding. I also enjoyed getting to work hand and hand with the engineers with my company discussing current problems for projects.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to move around in the company during my time with them and try different types of testing.

Advice

Ask as many questions as possible. The engineers and managers at these companies are very intelligent and have a lot of experience and knowledge to offer you.

Civil Engineering and Material Tester

May 2019 • Bismarck, ND

What I liked

Braun provided an opportunity to get certified in materials testing. They gave us hands on training and aided us in the preparation for the ACI test. I enjoyed the first few months of testing, and learning about materials. How to deal with contractors, how to deal with sub-par conditions and all the Bismarck employees who helped me become a better employee. I really was impressed with Brauns safety team. Every month, we had a team safety meeting. These meetings showed us precautions of what to do when a situation occurred. Very impressed with the safety situation.

What I wish was different

Braun does not provide housing for the co-op. I wish Braun would at least aid us in this situation. I worked in four different offices in North Dakota, each of these ran completely differently. No, consistency between the offices, in my experience. I had a few poor experiences in other offices which hurt my overall experience with the company. They kind of threw me in the flames right off the bat. Especially in some things I haven't done before, like coring. They kind of flew me in the flames to finish a job. I wish they would of prepared me better. Scheduling, I would of liked a more consistent schedule. Working an X amount of hours, I was on call alot during this Co-Op, but it felt like I was wasting my time while being on call, since I was not getting paid for it. I felt like towards end of the co-op, I was no longer learning, but just being a laborer. I felt like I was like cheap labor, not being utilized like a intern. I didn't learn anything more after the first few months of being around.

Advice

Don't come in expecting the co-op to be easy. There isn't much engineering work in this job, but being a technician prepares you to deal with contractors and soils.
