What I liked

There really is no ceiling, and there is a lot of opportunity to build professional relationships at work. Even if you don't get many opportunities to write copy in the first few weeks, there are opportunities to pitch stories and attend pitch meetings. It is an honor to attend the pitch meetings, and very inspiring to see how a magazine with different women heading the various categories work with each others' ideas. There is a lot of flexibility with scheduling, especially since it is unpaid. I like this freedom and ability to work up to the confidence I aspire to have in my future professional career in this industry.

What I wish was different

There is a bit of a hazing period, which is normal for interns to experience within the first few weeks. It is mildly discouraging, as it is humbling, to be put in your place as an intern whose job is to learn and be helpful. A lot of things you must learn yourself, as the hazing culture indicates a self-taught skillset to framework any possible upward mobility.

Advice

It's very empowering to see women who are in the roles you wish to have working their magic as a team right before your eyes, so make sure to align your schedule to pitch meetings. Many writers also went to NYU, and are willing to help you get ahead if you ask the right questions. Where the internship can go all falls into your hands, and it's important to be proactive if you expect anything to come out of this internship for your long-term career.

Advice

Go in early, stay late. There is always something you can be helping with or learning from. I did not want to leave my team at the end of the summer!

What I liked

I loved working alongside the editorial assistant and completing the tasks of an entry-level magazine job. It was a great experience to write copy for the Hearst Lifestyle Group (Woman's Day, Redbook, and Good Housekeeping). I had to adapt my writing voice to fit each brand's audience. In addition, I helped organize a project for a media appearance.

What I wish was different

As the industry shifts, I wish I had more exposure to digital content creation.

Advice

Be sure to ask your internship supervisor for meetings with other departments, and to sit in on as many meetings as possible. It was a valuable experience to make connections and get the perspectives of other Hearst employees.
