What I liked

This internship gave me a really deep understanding of what the medical device industry is like. It was project-based and most of the interns had a main project and some smaller tasks. I gained more experience and knowledge in designing, performing test protocols, and writing up the reports that follow the testing. All of the interns also work under a senior engineer mentor that directs them in their projects and gives them advice. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at NeuWave. All of the engineers were close, and talking to the other engineers during lunch was a memorable experience. Also, I was never scared to ask questions to anybody. If they didn't know the answer to your question, they would always lead you to somebody that does.

What I wish was different

Advice

I definitely recommend asking a lot of questions. The engineers that work at NeuWave are highly intelligent and will make sure your questions are answered. Also, engage and reach out to people so you can help them out with what they're working on or just to hear their story.

Engineering Research & Development Intern

What I liked

There were many features of this internship that I found really valuable. Firstly, I enjoyed the project-based nature of the internship as all of the interns were assigned their own projects to complete. This gave me a sense of autonomy and allowed me to take initiative to reach out to other engineers/departments and do my own research as needed. In addition, I also enjoyed networking and learning with the other engineers and employees at NeuWave. Everyone was very friendly, welcoming, and were always eager to share their life and professional experiences, which created a very collaborative work culture. I learned a lot from reaching out to the employees and gaining professional insight from them. Lastly, another great aspect of this internship was that I gained valuable hands-on experiences in industry, doing research, fabrication, testing, documentation, etc. Since this internship, I have been using all the skills I developed during the internship in my coursework, extracurriculars, and more to advance my career as an engineer.

Research and Development Intern

What I liked

All of the work that was completed over the course of the internship was meaningful and it directly effected the company. As a result, the internship provided a very impactful and beneficial experience that allowed me to understand the medical device industry as well as how much each employee can make a difference and directly effect clients. Each project I worked on throughout the summer was cross-disciplinary, demonstrating the importance of working together, not only within the research and development group, but across all departments. This internship and the cooperation required drove home the impact every department has on the company's overall success. The summer project was tailored toward my interests, providing an enjoyable project that allowed me to gain and practice skills directly related to the career I am pursuing. I also had a lot of freedom and independence associated with the summer project, giving me the ability to do my own research, making the project my own. This independence provided a great opportunity for growth and learning as well as prepared me for a career within the medical device industry. I enjoyed that I did not just work on a single project the entire summer, but was able to take on a variety of other projects. There were many different projects that the research and development engineers needed help on, so there was always work to be performed throughout the summer and there was always an opportunity that fit my interests. The projects were all very beneficial, providing great hands-on experience that allowed me to development my technical, professional, and soft skills as well as understand what to expect in industry. One of the biggest benefits from the internships was that everyone was very willing to help and answer any questions I had. I was able to go to any employee and gain incite or help from them, whether it was on a project I was working on, general questions about the the medical industry, or academic, career, and professional advice. Everyone was very kind and willing to answer all of my questions, allowing me to build my knowledge and make beneficial connections. The vast amount of knowledge across all the employees allowed these interactions to be very rewarding.

Advice

Everyone is very willing to help with your projects, answer any questions associated with your projects, academics, or a career in the medical device industry, and connect with you. However, in order to gain these beneficial experiences with your co-workers, you need to reach out to and connect with them. To make the most out of the internship, you need to make the effort to interact with your co-workers and manager.

R&D Intern

May - September 2021 • Madison, WI

What I liked

There were many pieces of this internship that I enjoyed and grew from. As interns, we were given our own projects to complete (specifically, I was given the task of redesigning test equipment and worked closely with a Senior Mechanical Engineer). Beyond being a wonderful skill-building opportunity, this project gave me a chance to learn a lot about the medical industry in terms of what the R&D process entails and the rigorous documentation standards. Furthermore, I felt that all the employees of NeuWave Medical were accessible and only an email (or short walk away). Through reaching out, I was able to develop a close working relationship with a Senior Embedded Engineer which opened me up to get my first experiences with working with embedded software and C. Ultimately, I was able to engage with bug-fixing and contribute to cross-functional meetings. I truly felt that NeuWave Medical supported and encouraged curious questions and the desire to learn. The employees were happy to pass down their knowledge and experience; all I had to do was ask! This made for a enlightening and innovative work environment.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to the other employees! You will find them open and willing to answer your questions or happy to point you to another employee that can. These conversations can lead to new, unexpected opportunities to build your skills or to just learn more about the medical device industry in general. Make the most of the opportunity and the knowledge that surrounds you in the workplace!
