What I liked

I was assigned a direct supervisor that had experiences similar to my own - she was a young woman who had interned at a smaller localized firm before coming to this larger corporate firm full time. Because she was somewhat similar in age she was able to relate to my schooling experiences, and talk personally about how she reconciled her passions and career. I was lucky to be guided and mentored by someone who could understand my perspective as someone new to the professional world.

What I wish was different

I wish that I were able to meet other interns - I became close to the other two interns who were in my department, however I didn't interact much with the other interns at the company when there were over 30. I definitely learned a lot just speaking to and working alongside the other two students, and I think I would have benefitted speaking to others especially given that they were from a host of different backgrounds that were foreign to me, although we had ended up at the same company working similar jobs.

Advice

I applied for the position even though I didn't technically meet the recommended requirements - it was a company I was passionate about, and my recruiter said that that drive was reflected in my cover letter. I conveyed that I would teach myself the skills I needed to learn on my own time before the beginning of the position, and I ended up being hired without that prerequisite.

Construction Project Management Intern

What I liked

I personally really enjoyed the hands-on experience of being placed on one of their biggest projects. I got to work with a variety of different project managers, BIM Coordinators, and Estimators of STV Inc. joint venture with S&P on Delta's New Terminal C Program. This experience gave me a wonderful insight into what a career in the world of construction might look like.

What I wish was different

The commute was anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half because I did not live near the site. If I could have found housing closer to the project or even a car, I wouldn't have to rely on NYC's public transportation service.

Advice

Don't be afraid to approach someone you don't know. Introduce yourself to everyone and anyone you can! You don't know what opportunities might arise if you never put yourself out there. Be open-minded and immerse yourself into every part of the company that you can as an intern.

I wish I had more access to their resources because I was limited with the help I could give.
