AmeriCorps VISTAs have been at the forefront of ending poverty in America for 50 years and, to date, have over a million members who have passionately given a year of service to make our country stronger. As an AmeriCorps VISTA at the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation you can play a leading role in improving the quality of life for Houstonians of all ages through the power of literacy—the ability to read, write, speak clearly, and think critically. Coalitions of VISTA supported, local service providers are working area-wide and in specific neighborhoods to engage thousands of change-makers in raising awareness and implementing strategies to improve literacy rates across the region. Everyone must be granted the right to learn how to read. Our vision is that Houston will be a city in which everyone has the requisite literacy skills needed for success in school, work, and life. Together, we can make this not only an idea or vision but also a reality. To accomplish our mission, BBHLF partners with nonprofit organizations that serve low-income communities to provide literacy support to Title 1 schools and to schools with a high number of students that receive free or reduced-priced lunches.

Member Duties : The After-School and Summer Literacy Program VISTA will partner with the Harris County Public Library system and other key stakeholders throughout the greater Houston community to lead the development new, sustainable after-school, out-of-school and summer literacy programs.
