Acoustic Engineer

Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a product-oriented environment to develop sonar transmitters and receivers for ASW applications with emphasis on air-deployed sonobuoys. Develop new transducers and/or modify/improve existing transducers for use in size-, weight-, and power-constrained applications. Perform laboratory and field testing on transducer/transducer systems as a part of the design verification/product qualification process. Perform root cause analysis to resolve performance issues and investigate anomalies. Prepare reports and presentations to disseminate the results of transducer development efforts for internal and external audiences. Mentor junior level engineering staff and engineering technicians in areas that fall within your area of specialization. Support on-going engineering and business development efforts pursuant to
underwater acoustic transduction.

Required Skills:

  • At least 2 years professional experience concerning the development of sonar transducers and related technologies for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) applications.
  • M.S. degree in Acoustics or a relevant engineering or physical science discipline with 2 or more years of experience; or a BS degree in Acoustics or a relevant engineering or physical science discipline with 4 or more years of experience.
  • Strong analytical skills concerning the development of piezoelectric and electro-dynamic transducers, including use of lumped parameter circuits and/or closed-form discrete/continuous solutions that employ the wave equation to predict the electro-acoustic performance of sonar transmitters and receivers.
  • Working knowledge of numerical modeling techniques, such as the finite element method to predict the electro-acoustic performance of sonar transmitters and receivers as well as investigating the structural acoustic response of acoustic transducers configured in specially designed housings, baffles, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as evidenced by ability to prepare reports and present results of engineering development efforts to small and large audiences in closed or open forums.
Desired Skills:

  • 10-years+ professional experience concerning the development of sonar transducers and related technologies for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) applications.
  • Ph.D. in Acoustics or a relevant engineering or physical science discipline.
  • Strong background in experimental methods in the laboratory and the field to categorize the electro-acoustic performance of sonar transmitters and receivers.
  • Working knowledge of analog signal conditioning circuits (i.e., preamplifiers, filters, power amplifiers, transformers, tuning inductors, etc.) for sonar transmitters and receivers.
  • Working knowledge of advanced materials and modeling techniques for sonar transmitters and receivers.

Physical Requirements:
  • Able & willing to travel to USSI and Government test sites, including at-sea testing
  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, presentation skills
  • Normal Finger Dexterity and Color Vision
  • Tools used:
  • Computer Skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Specialized equipment (chart recorder, load cells, pressure test stations, etc.)
  • Standard hand tools
  • Calipers, measurement equipment
