General Description: Technical work in traffic control devices involving inspections and conducting routine and special traffic studies and counts.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE/RECOVERY ACTIVITIES: All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an Emergency. During an Emergency employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
Essential Job Functions:Observes traffic movement and volumes and records information. Makes investigations relative to all traffic control devices and prepares reports of findings. Prepares detailed condition diagrams or take digital photos of intersections, roadways, documents existing traffic control devices and road features. Prepares signing and marking work orders for the installation or modification of traffic control signs and markings.
Inspects traffic control signs and markings installations for conformance with plans and specifications. Performs maintenance of traffic inspections. Prepares inspection reports for all inspections.
Contacts the public in response to customer service requests for new or revisions to traffic control devices. Operates traffic studies equipment and devices, such as traffic counters, turning movement counters, distance measuring devices, digital camera and other data collection devices.
Performs related work as required. Employees may be subject to after-hours call back to assist in emergencies.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of the information in the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Florida Department of Transportation Manual on Uniform Traffic Studies, and Florida Department of Transportation Standards Index 600, 17302, and 17346.
- Knowledge in conducting road safety assessments.
- Ability to use various types of electronic and manual traffic studies equipment.
- Ability to use various hand tools.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
- Ability to use a personal computer and data collection devices.
Minimum Requirements:
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Requires working outdoors in all weather conditions standing, stooping, sitting and bending. Requires the operation of a motor vehicle or small truck. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Two years of experience in conducting traffic studies and/or installation of traffic control signs and markings.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid driver's license. Must obtain a Florida Department of Transportation recognized Work Zone Safety Certification within six months of employment. International Municipal Signal Association Signs and Markings Level I certification is required within one year of employment.
