Chief Satellite Ground Systems Engineer

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) has been developing innovative technologies and solutions for cutting-edge DoD and intelligence programs for almost six decades. Our expertise is in space and airborne IR, VIS, UV, and RF sensors, small satellite technologies, test and calibration, cybersecurity, data visualization and assurance, and ground stations.

SDL is seeking a chief engineer to define the future of and guide the development of satellite ground systems focused on small satellite operations and data fusion. The successful candidate must be able to apply technologies in novel ways to solve research questions, provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary teams, and have experience with integrating antennae, RF ground strings, IT, space hardware, and public cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud). Additional background in security engineering, COMSEC, and information assurance will be a significant plus. The selected candidate will support the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM.

Responsibilities Include:
·  Develop the future system architecture in conjunction with the government lead
·  Define and manage the technology roadmap
·  Lead the design, implementation, and testing of satellite command and control and mission data processing systems (includes RF links; C2 operations centers; and data ingest, fusion, and dissemination solutions)
·  Apply emerging technologies to enhance RF links, space flight operations, and space ground data processing
·  Leverage cloud computing principles
·  Attend technical meetings with or on behalf of the government program manager
·  Define ground system experiments and create experimentation plans
·  Lead SDL’s portion of S&T Ground as the SDL PM. Will report programmatically to a portfolio manager.
·  Work closely with SDL product managers to define future development features for SDL’s ground and flight software tools

Required Qualifications:
·  BS in engineering, computer science, or other related field
·  Strong background in systems engineering and architecture
·  Experience leading technical teams
·  Understanding of military command and control processes and procedures
·  Experience architecting cloud-based applications and solutions
·  Ability to apply and uphold standard software development processes, including software analysis, design, testing, peer review, and continuous integration techniques
·  Architecture development and agile/iterative systems development life cycle (SDLC) practices for hardware/software systems
·  Ability to decompose complex problems and apply technologies in non-traditional ways to reach customer objectives 
·  Able to present technical solutions to executive leadership
·  Ability to work independently and with team members
·  Must have or be able to obtain a DoD security clearance
·  Must be a US citizen
·  Must be able to travel

Preferred Qualifications:
·  Master’s degree or PhD in engineering, computer science or related field
·  Understanding of the RMF accreditation process
·  Experience with containerized microservices development and/or serverless application development 
·  Experience in TCP/IP-based networking, RF principles, and model-based systems engineering
·  Familiar with RF Licensing processes
·  Active TS/SCI clearance
