Weapons Effects Modeling & Simulation Engineer

Applied Research Associates, Inc. is looking for candidates to join our Advanced Modeling & Simulation Systems team in Raleigh, NC where you will support our growing business in the areas of GIS, physics-based simulation, and geometric modeling. Ideal candidates will have a significant desire to develop software, learn programming best practices, and help strengthen our national security.

Our work focuses on modeling a diverse range of phenomena including blast modeling, fragmentation, structural response to extreme loads, human injury, and equipment response. Your day-to-day work will consist of software development, software testing, and engineering verification & validation. Since the work varies substantially based on changing customer requirements, you need to be prepared to learn quickly and produce quality software solutions. Our solutions range from integrating proven (i.e., old) FORTRAN physics libraries to creating novel machine learning models (i.e., all the current buzzwords). The most successful candidates have a strong technical background in engineering, physics, or mathematics in addition to the desire to write modular, robust, and performant software. Required Skills
  • This position requires strong coding skills in C++, Java or C#. In order to consider your application, we require that all applicants take a programming test. (We will provide you the link for the test)
  • Experience with object-oriented programming languages like C++, Java, or Python
  • Desire to work in a dynamic software development team environment (e.g., Agile, Scrum, XP practices)
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an Active DoD Secret Security Clearance 

Required Experience
  • An MS or PhD in engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related discipline with 0-2 years relevant work experience

Other Desirable Skills
  • Expertise in DoD modeling and simulation technology, structural dynamics, blast effects, structural collapse, and/or probabilistic analysis
  • Familiarity with software design patterns and modern C++
