LABORATORY ASSISTANT - TECHNICIAN - ENGINE AND AFTERTREATMENT

Job Summary:

Work effectively and safely in a laboratory environment frequently interfacing with engines and related hardware, test cell equipment, instrumentation, fuel systems and computers. Assist with the installation of engines into test cells and perform engine maintenance, repairs and modifications to specified standards. Support the maintenance, repairs and installation and construction of new test facilities and equipment. Complete training related to test cell calibrations for all related equipment, hardware, sampling equipment and instrumentation following established calibration procedures. Operate the test cell and emissions sampling carts and accurately monitor and record critical parameters and identify out of tolerance data. Must be available for overtime, shift work, limited travel and other assigned duties.

Education/Experience:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent with 0-5 years experience working on and repairing gasoline and diesel engines. Hands-on experience is required (i.e. proficient in use of hand tools, engine/vehicle repair as a hobby or welding/fabrication/plumbing experience). Basic knowledge related to the safe operation of hand tools is required. A strong interest and desire for a career in the automotive industry (gasoline and diesel engines) is required. Those that qualify for the Technician title must have ability to function successfully/productively without direct supervision while on shift work. Must be able to interpret and follow written and verbal work instructions and communicate effectively. Knowledge and experience with computers and Microsoft software is desired. Must have the ability to work productively and professionally with clients and SwRI staff in a team environment or solo if necessary. Must be able to follow and adhere to written and verbal instructions from supervision, project leaders or designated personnel. Must be able to work in an environment with heat and noise and must be able to follow all safety policies and practices including the frequent use of Personal Protective Equipment. Must be able to interface with various computer software and control programs to input data, retrieve data and adjust engine, test cell and sample system parameters. Must be efficient with the selection and proper use and safe handling of hand and power tools. Shift work required. Must pass SwRI Mechanical Assessment test. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
This position requires passing the Mechanical Assessment test.
