Moto Mechanical Engineering Intern

Motorola Mobility is one of the world’s fastest growing smartphone providers, creating groundbreaking, affordable, high-quality products designed and built with the global customer in mind. And it’s our people who make this all happen. We are thinkers, risk-takers and problem solvers, working together to constantly challenge the status quo. If you share our commitment to ingenuity, creativity and innovation, we want you to help us define our world of tomorrow.

Position located at Motorola HQ in Chicago, IL.

About Our Team
We are a group of fifteen mechanical design engineers in downtown Chicago that design the leading edge flagship mobile phones for worldwide markets. We design, test and analyze all levels of the phone assembly to address structural, cosmetic, thermal, electrical performance, and customer perceived quality aspects of the finished product. We look for creative and solid engineering approaches to solve complex design issues. We also work closely with many disciplines such as electrical, radio frequency, antenna and software engineering. The greatest reward is to see consumers using the product you had a hand in designing. We work as a close knit team and rely on tight interactive communication to meet our goals.

What You Will Do
You will be utilizing computer aided design (Creo) to design basic components that meet the requirements of different manufacturing processes such as injection molding, metal stamping, die casting, die cutting, and CNC machining. This will also include working with suppliers to manufacture prototype samples that meet cosmetic and design requirements with good process controls. You will be evaluating these parts as they are initially made for dimensional correctness and proper fit to interfacing components. This will involve time in our mechanical lab utilizing multiple measurement and inspection tools. You may also be involved in some of our accelerated life testing to find and analyze design weaknesses. There will constantly be new challenges and new things to learn. Finally, you will be exposed to other engineering disciplines and also become more aware of other consumer insights.

Who You Are
You need to:
Be working towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
You need to have a basic understanding of Creo and be able to model parametrically.
A definite ability to work within a team and take input from other team members is needed.

It would be a plus if:
You are interested in learning about multiple manufacturing processes and have an open mind to new challenges. You should be willing to roll your sleeves up and work in our lab to analyze many different components and build up phones or sub-assemblies to evaluate part interactions.

Some of the benefits of interning at Lenovo include competitive compensation, enrichment and development programs, and access to a global network of peers and mentors.
