Architecture/Interior Design Intern

This is a unique opportunity for an inquisitive self-motivated, and creative individual to make a positive impact on Sarasota County. The Facilities Planning department is seeking an intern to update existing drawings in AutoCAD. We maintain all of the County’s drawings for the various Facilities with over 617 record drawings. Proficiency in AutoCAD is mandatory. Student pursuing an Architecture of Interior Design degree in the Commercial field.
This internship offers the opportunity to gain additional experience in Architecture and/or Interior Design Additionally, other learning experiences can be developed in relation to intern’s interest and area of study within the field of Construction. The program will provide the intern with a constructive review and evaluation of their skills and competencies, providing growth opportunities and direction to further professional and educational development.
Intern Responsibilities:
  • A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.
  • Participation in organized intern events.
Job Duties:
  • Field Audits: Surveying/validating space assignments in various Facilities. Update drawings based on information.
  • Site Measurements, creation of as-built drawings.
  • Perform various drafting tasks in AutoCAD such as: Apply layer/CAD standards to existing drawings, re-numbering, updating floor plans with furniture, electrical and data information.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently.
  • A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.
Operational Support / General Duties
  • Assist department as needed in the administration of plans
  • Organize digital drawing library 
  • Observe and attend meetings with clients or project stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a college/university, seeking a graduate (post-baccalaureate) degree or senior level graduate studies. (Proof of current enrollment required at time of application.) May consider recent graduate.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Candidates currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in Architecture and/or Interior Design or closely related field.
Specific knowledge, skills, abilities and/or machines, equipment, special tools as required for the job
  • Proficient in AutoCAD; version 2018 or higher
  • Architecture and/or Interior Design, ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing; flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced atmosphere; along with creative problem-solving skills.
  • Able to read and interpret schematic designs and construction documents
  • Enough personal initiative, confidence and responsibility to own a project and its success.
  • Energy and tenacity to stick at the project and always find a path forward to complete it.
  • Temperament to learn--changing behavior whenever something could be done better.
  • Ability to read and follow protocols of project management.
  • Effective communication skills-both writing and speaking.
  • Ability to engage and gain value from those who can help during the project and in using its findings.
Schedule:
  • Flexible - full time and part time available (20 - 40 hrs/week)
