Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses -- one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, and the other in Manhattan. The Fieldston Middle and Upper School campuses are located in Riverdale and are comprised of approximately 1000 students from 6-12th grade.

We are looking for passionate educators to join our community who are committed to progressive education, who consider ethics to be at the core of their work with students and colleagues, and who will contribute to the academic success of all of our students. Currently, we have a position as a Middle and Upper School Visual Arts teacher with a focus on architecture and design & engineering. Primary responsibilities include teaching approximately .80 FTE course load primarily in Architecture, Design & Engineering, and Drawing to 7th through 12th-grade students.
The candidate will implement a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate for the range of ages, skill and experience levels for middle school through high school students; they should have a passion for working with young people of this age range in a school with a diverse student body in a values-based community. They will have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within and outside of the classroom.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in teaching and working with issues surrounding architecture and design & engineering, as well as other 2D and 3D art media. Primary courses are Architecture and Design & Engineering, but there is the possibility of teaching Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and other courses on a rotating basis. The ability to apply a variety of pedagogical approaches and to be flexible is a must, a sense of humor is a plus. A proven ability to collaborate with teachers within the visual arts department and across a range of disciplines is also required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Studio Art with a concentration in Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Design, Engineering, Sculpture, or equivalent. Masters preferred. Personal studio practice a plus
- Prior successful experience teaching Middle and High School students
- Understanding of cultural competency; a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion work
- Excellent organization skills and ability to maintain the studio space and keep track of materials and supplies
- Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
- Passion for progressive education
