Computer Hardware/Network Systems Engineer

What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Computer Systems Engineer to work in mixed hardware/software environments. Are you passionate about designing, developing and testing computing software, data centers, and networks? Join our dynamic multidisciplinary team to address some of the most exciting challenges facing our nation’s security! You will directly support national security missions in a variety of high-impact areas within Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation R&D.
Technical focus areas will include the following:
  • Software, data center, network design, testing, and deployment
  • Verification and validation of complex requirements
  • Cloud architectures and environments
You will engage in various interactions across the laboratory, including collaboration with partner organizations and projects. The selected applicant will have significant opportunity for leadership development and engagement in leadership development activities.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Develop technical specifications for and analyze system configurations and processing solutions
  • Test software, hardware, and network conformance to specifications
  • Develop automated verification and validation techniques and technologies
  • Identify, analyze and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex computing design challenges using individual creativity and judgment.
  • Apply technical judgment in determining efficient application of computational engineering practices to ensure the delivery of high-quality product
  • Troubleshoot, configure, and deploy software systems for end user
This position will require 25 percent travel (one week per month).
About Our Team
We have researched and developed new monitoring systems and technologies for over half a century. Building on that legacy, today we support national security missions involving nuclear proliferation detection, treaty monitoring, arms control, and various needs within the national security communities.
Space Ground Systems Programs (06740) leads the design, development, and delivery of the operational ground segment of the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System (USNDS). USNDS is a space-based remote sensing system designed to meet national security needs for both the war-fighter and the treaty monitoring community, across the life cycle of these systems.

Qualifications We Require
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or related STEM field; OR Bachelor's degree in above stated fields plus 4 years' related experience
  • Proficiency with Unix/Linux operating systems and command shell scripting
  • Experience with networked and distributed architectures
Qualifications We Desire
  • Experience in software, data center, and network design and implementation, including familiarity with modern development and deployment practices and tools
  • Experience with automated verification and validation techniques and technologies
  • Experience with developing, testing, and deploying code in cloud environments
  • Experience with agile methodologies and knowledge of Test and/or Behavior Driven Development (TDD/BDD)
  • Experience with DevOps and implementing or using CI/CD pipelines
  • Proficiency with computer programming languages such as C++, Java, or Python
  • Experience with information assurance requirements, processes, and toolsets
  • Demonstrated ability to perform as a strong individual contributor within a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong customer-focus and proactive response to questions/requests with demonstrated exceptional follow-through
Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
