As an IBM Quantum Design Intern, you will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary, global team of developers, designers, researchers, and engineers to bring the IBM Quantum computing experience to a wide audience. If you are self-motivated, curious, and love to use data-driven insights to effectively share technology with others, we have the right opportunity for you!
Your Role and Responsibilities
We are now accepting applications for students to become IBM Quantum Design Interns in 2021. IBM Quantum Design Interns will have the opportunity to work on projects related to design research, user experience design, or visual design. They will work to uncover insights into the worldwide quantum computing community, and share quantum knowledge with users from the first introduction to quantum through quantum computing research and development. The ideal candidate must be able to work with internal and external stakeholders in order to deliver a positive experience for quantum computing community members.
Students from around the world with varying backgrounds and professional interests and curiosities are encouraged to apply for this unique paid internship experience. The IBM Quantum internship program will connect you with other students, university programs, IBM Q Network organizations, and the quantum computing community. From contributing to the open-source Qiskit framework, to sharing fundamental research in quantum computing, to helping people understand the relevance of quantum computing, IBM Quantum interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experiences essential for future professional opportunities as well as continued studies.
IBM Quantum interns will have the opportunity to:
  • Learn how companies conduct quantum computing research
  • Work on meaningful problems at the intersection of design and quantum computing
  • Receive mentorship from IBM designers, engineers, researchers, and others
  • Collaborate with peers working in the field of quantum computing
  • Get access to state-of-the-art quantum processors and devices at IBM
  • Gain a broad understanding of quantum research, from fundamental to applied
  • Get exposure to the wide range of research happening at IBM
  • Receive training on Qiskit and mentorship on contributing to open source
Candidates currently enrolled in collegiate programs are encouraged to apply.
United States 2021 IBM Quantum Design Interns will work out of one of the IBM Research labs in either Yorktown Heights, New York or Austin, Texas for up to twelve weeks from June through August (housing or housing stipend, transportation, and some meals will be provided). Candidates will have an opportunity to discuss specific location, timing, and academic calendars as part of the application process. Depending on the role, some travel may be involved to IBM Q Network and IBM Quantum events such as Qiskit Camp.
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • A portfolio of work that highlights the candidate's expertise in their discipline
Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
  • Experience conducting primary and secondary user research
  • Defining user experience goals and design principles
  • Supporting and planning for variation of user contexts (e.g. culture, environment, and activity)
  • Converging and translating technological, operational, and functional constraints into human-centered opportunities
  • Designing visual experiences that unify and exemplify the convergence of user/market insights
  • Communicating through nuanced use of color, tone, layout, composition, imagery, typography, interactions, and motion
  • Participation in the Qiskit Advocates Program
  • Proficiency with prototyping tools such as Figma or Sketch
  • Degree in Psychology, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, Anthropology, Sociology, Behavioral Economics, User Experience Design, Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Information Architecture, Graphic/Visual Design, Communication Design, Motion Design, or related field
  • Experience or familiarity with designing for accessibility standards
