Materials Engineering Intern - Sealing

Summary: The Cooper Standard Sealings and Fluid Transfer Systems Laboratory Team in Livonia, MI has an exciting chance for an Intern to provide support for Summer 2021. This position will provide you with an opportunity to build hands on knowledge and experience within a world class material development lab, responsible for engineering next generation EPDM and other chemical formulas. You will experience a wealth of Lab responsibilities and processes. For example, this Intern will perform a variety of duties related to a lab technician, calibration manager, maintenance manager and auditor. The projects will include prepping lab testing, running lab testing & reporting final lab testing results. This will also include experience related to calibrating lab equipment, maintaining lab equipment, and auditing the lab’s ISO 17025 accreditation. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Perform an internal lab audit against ISO 17025:2017 standard 
  • Perform in house quality checks & verifications on lab equipment and instrumentation 
  • Perform in house maintenance on lab equipment 
  • Prep, run and report out on Lab Test Requests submitted by Program Engineers 
  • May, on occasion, be required to perform duties other than those specified in this description 
 
Requirements: 

  • Must have met the credit requirements to achieve Senior level student status prior to May 2021, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field 
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 G.P.A.  
  • Must be able to work from our Livonia, Michigan location
  • Must have good interpersonal skills 
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications 
  • Must have good organizational skills 
  • Must have positive attitude and good work ethic 
  • Strong knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas: 
  • Problem identification 
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Computer and electronics skills 
  • Ability to organize, plan, and complete multiple tasks 
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Critical Thinking: Using logic and reason to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.  
  • Mechanical skills are a plus 
  • Lab testing knowledge also a plus 
  • Able to read Engineering Specifications is a plus 
  • Having good knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures, SOPs 
 
Work Environment/Conditions: 
  • Professional Office and Chemical Engineering Lab Environment 
  • Must wear proper PPE while on manufacturing floor 
  • Travel to manufacturing facilities or customer locations when needed
