Glorieta Adventure Camps - Head Lifeguard
The responsibility of the Head Lifeguard is to maintain safety and structure in and around the lake. As Head Lifeguard, you will maintain equipment (including, but not limited to life jackets, lifeguard safety gear, waterfront inflatables, kayaks, SUPS, first aid supplies, dock structures (both permanent and floating)), supervise lifeguarding staff, coordinate waterfront schedule with supervisor and programs, be available for guest needs/questions/concerns, and ensure proper enforcement and compliance of waterfront policies and procedures.
Daily Tasks
- Checking water temperature at the Swing steps
- Inspecting all waterfront activities (docs, inflatables, swings, lilly pads, etc) and ensure they are functioning properly and ready to use for the day - closing down any activity that is not properly functioning and alerting lifeguards of this when they arrive
- Maintaining cleanliness of lake area - have lifeguards help collect and put life jackets in bins, lost and found items, and trash where it belongs; and that the Lifeguard shack stays well organized
- Know planned schedule for waterfront opening times and continually communicate with programs and lifeguard staff changes to this schedule
- Record any incidents of the day in proper form (activity/injury forms)
- Maintain control of music and microphone usage
- Check weather updates and proceed as necessary
- Lock-up lifeguard shack when shift is complete
- Lead monthly skill reviews for lifeguards
Staff Supervision Tasks
Ensure all lifeguards:
- are present and ready for duty (not sick, sleepy or otherwise unable to safely guard and have all needed gear - lifeguard pack with whistle, CPR mask, gloves, band-aids; lifeguard tube; water and sunscreen)
- know of the EAP (Emergency Action Plan) and their roles within this
- know the rotation flow and rotate as quickly as possible
- report any incidents (with details) or broken/damaged equipment
- maintain proper guarding techniques
- are properly enforcing policies and procedures
