Lower School Principal

The Lower School Principal reports to the Head of School and is a member of the senior administrative team. S/he oversees the PS-3 through Grade 5 Lower School of 250 students and 45 faculty and staff members. The Principal is supported by two Assistant Principals and a support services team consisting of a psychologist, a nurse, and learning specialists. In addition to the classroom teachers and assistant teachers, there is a team of ‘specials teachers’ who teach Spanish, French, music, art, science, STEM, health and wellness, and research and information skills.

The next Lower School Principal will have the opportunity to build upon the work of the past years, during which the School has engaged in faculty-wide training in the Responsive Classroom approach and brought coherence and consistency to the curriculum and pedagogy in several areas. The literacy curriculum is grounded in the Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Project and is workshop based. The mathematics curriculum is problem-solving oriented and follows the research-based Singapore Mathematics approach.

The successful candidate will be an experienced Lower School leader and a skilled Lower School teacher who loves children and enjoys being in the classroom and being present with students, teachers, and parents. S/he will have experience with the curriculum used in the Lower School at D-E. Importantly, s/he will be a culturally competent visionary educator with a demonstrated commitment to and skill in leading a diverse community of learners with an integrated curricular approach to embracing and ensuring equity, inclusion, and belonging from the earliest years.
