Under the general direction of the Operations Manager or Branch Manager, the field-based branch network intern will develop young professionals for future leadership roles within the branch network. The program provides cross-functional, department specific, networking, and learning opportunities, while engaging interns to produce meaningful work with real business impact. The program aligns to Grainger’s commitment to invest in our success, acquire top talent and have a positive impact on future professionals.
Responsibilities
- We will utilize a blended approach grounded in the 70/20/10 model. 70% will entail “hands on” and practice on-the-job. 20% will come from virtual sessions, discussions and group assignments/projects. 10% will be from e-learning, articles, books, and virtual sessions.

- Deliver an exceptional customer experience by learning and executing the Unparalleled Service Behaviors through shadowing team members and providing feedback on current service/behavior observed
- Learn to operate and perform business functions in Salesforce, SAP and MS Office working environment
- Provide new ideas and recommend solutions to business or team opportunities, foster a continuous improvement environment
- Take initiative to learn leadership behaviors by pro-actively seeking out opportunities for growth and development and continuously learn throughout the internship experience
- Commit to learning the Grainger Edge and Principles and use them to personally develop by asking questions and seeking feedback
- Contribute to run operationally excellence facilities by learning and adhering to Grainger Branch Business Excellence Standards
- Actively participate in internship program training activities, development opportunities and events
- Demonstrate willingness to take risks, step out of your comfort zone and take on new assignments
- Learn how to make business decisions based on the data provided in the Grainger Branch Network Reporting and Analytics site and Power BI Reporting site
- All other duties as assigned
Preferred Education & Experience
- Working towards a bachelor’s degree with an expected graduation between December 2021 and June 2022
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Strong interest in working in a leadership role and team-oriented thinking
- Learn to adapt to current technology needs
- Passion for customer service, sales and people development with an ability to energize others
- Good interpersonal, communication and relationship building skills with internal team members and external customers
- Ability to adapt to shifting demands and competing priorities
- Strong problem solving, organizational and decision-making skills with the ability to drive results
- Ability to understand and articulate the vision of the branch to all employees
- Ability to plan, organize and delegate work
- Ability to train people on processes, procedures, compliance and product knowledge
- Demonstrated competence in the use of computers and software applications
- Able to operate powered industrial equipment as needed
- Must pass a pre-internship drug screen
Work Environment
- Position reports to a Branch Manager or Operations Manager
- Able to work in a fast-paced changing environment
- Significant daily interaction with team members, managers, customers, and local sellers
- Work is performed in an office, showroom or warehouse environment with a moderate noise level and frequent distractions
- Some time may be spent at customer locations in a local area
- Majority of time is spent standing and walking
- Physical requirements include reaching, grasping, climbing, standing and bending
- Regular use of computer, keyboard and mouse
- Must be able to regularly lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and heavier loads with assistance
- Required to travel within the market assigned

- This position has direct impact on customer retention, driving revenue, and financial results of the branch through the execution of superior customer service, sales partnerships, operational excellence and the continuous improvement of branch processes and productivity
- Directly influences the work environment through positive team member relations and the creation of a focused, empowered, high performance team
- Responsible for the integrity of day to day business practices
- Solve business problems by engaging and building relationships with business partners, working with team members, and researching issues
- During our 10-week summer program, you will work closely with a mentor while learning different business areas and functions within a branch. You will spend days learning to lead and motivate a team, driving sales, merchandising products, and providing an exceptional experience for our customers
