News Associate- Phoenix, AZ
The Associated Press seeks a news associate to join its U.S. West Region desk in Phoenix, a dynamic operation that includes editors in text, photo, multimedia and video who work as a team to ensure AP owns coverage of the day’s news in all formats.
Responsibilities:
This is a temporary position, lasting for two years. Reporting to a deputy news director, the news associates will help monitor and prepare for publication content from AP members for use by other AP members. They will also help identify, authenticate and prepare user generated content for publication. The associate may also assist in managing APStoryShare communities, which bring together newsrooms to create vibrant state and topical news sharing networks. This newsperson must have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
The successful candidate will:
- thrive in a fast-paced and intensely competitive market, employing a solutions-based approach to all challenges to the AP’s success.
- have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
- work with AP’s field leaders, including state-based news editors, to ensure AP is improving its daily newsroom-to-newsroom contact with members and customers.
- know how to communicate effectively over distance, and create community using virtual platforms
- interact with AP’s Nerve Center and Editorial Support desks and planning editors to ensure up-to-date information about AP’s coverage is available to customers in real time.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have strong reporting, writing and editing skills, and a broad understanding of state, national and international news perspectives. Applicants should have a demonstrated aggressiveness in pursuing breaking news and success in collaborating and communicating with various levels of staff and customers. The successful candidate must be able to relocate to Phoenix and be prepared to work a variety of hours, including at night, overnight and on weekend days and nights.
Other qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
- Strong command of social media and networking tools in newsgathering is a plus.
- Creative problem-solving skills and an ability to reorganize priorities in the face of rapidly changing needs and resources.
