ABOUT THE ROGER ARLINER YOUNG DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP

Inspired by efforts to increase racial diversity in conservation and clean energy, the Roger Arliner Young (RAY) Diversity Fellowship Program aims to increase and facilitate environmentally-related career pathways for emerging leaders of color. The RAY Fellowship Program is a paid fellowship designed to equip recent college graduates with the tools, experiences, support, and community they need to become leaders in the conservation and clean energy sectors—one that, in our visions of the future, fully represents, includes, and is led by the diverse communities, perspectives, and experiences of the United States.





ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

The mission of the Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) is to support visionary, action-oriented, and diverse leadership for a just and sustainable future. ELP aims to catalyze change by providing emerging leaders with the support and guidance they need to launch new endeavors, achieve new successes, and rise to new leadership positions. POSITION SUMMARY

ELP is seeking a RAY Fellow who is a digital storyteller with a passion for environmental issues to help generate fresh, compelling content that conveys the organization’s mission and lifts up the work of the ELP community. The Fellow will be an active member of ELP, and will have the opportunity to learn and apply storytelling practices, while working in close cooperation with our staff. Connecting people to our mission is of vital importance. In this position, a RAY Fellow will have the opportunity to add to ELP’s storytelling work across various media, including the development of a podcast. The RAY Fellow will be an integral part of our team, and will gain hands-on experience building communications strategies and developing powerful narratives about our work and community of Fellows.
The candidate will contribute to ELP’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by gathering and producing important stories that uplift Fellows’ unique experiences in their fields. The RAY Fellow will work with ELP’s staff to craft high-quality audio narratives and social content for www.elpnet.org and the organization’s social media platforms, using their perspective to enrich our content and inspire our audiences. This would include, but is not limited to, keeping current with environmental news relating to ELP Senior Fellows. Through this process, the RAY Fellow will have the opportunity to learn about ELP’s work by collaborating with ELP staff and Senior Fellows in order to hone their communication skills and grow their professional networks. The candidate will have the additional opportunity to develop and work on a signature project, to be identified in the first year of the fellowship and completed by the end of the second year.
The Fellow will attend staff meetings and some team meetings, join our established culture of continuous improvement and culture of innovation. As a member of a remote-working team, they will be expected to manage their own balanced work week based on the demands of the job any relevant deadlines. As possible, ELP’s full staff gathers in person for some working retreats (temporarily on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic).





PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work collaboratively with ELP staff, Senior Fellows, and other subject matter experts, to develop content (including website, social media, and podcasts) that aligns with ELP’s narrative goals
  • Effectively distribute ELP’s digital content and stories to diverse audiences and networks
  • Edit, proofread, and prepare various articles for digital, print, or podcast as required
  • Monitor news relevant to ELP issue areas to identify topics for stories
  • Use data tools/analytics to help inform content ideas and angles
  • Assist with the coordination of the editorial and production process
  • Attend occasional Core Programs retreats to gain context of the ELP Fellowship experience.

ADDITIONAL FELLOWSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to the responsibilities at the host institution outlined above, RAY Fellows will spend, on average, 2-4 hours per week (5-10% of work time) on the following:
  • Actively communicating and building community with their RAY Fellow cohort and previous RAY Fellows.
  • Attending monthly check-ins calls (including 1-on-1 check-ins with RAY program staff and group calls with their RAY Fellow cohort).
  • Meeting regularly with mentors both inside and outside the host institution.
  • Attending monthly professional development webinars, trainings, and other opportunities to build knowledge and skills.
  • Developing a Personal Leadership Plan (PLP) in their 2nd year with the support of supervisor(s), mentors, RAY program staff, and their RAY Fellow cohort. The PLP will serve as a tool for self-reflection, planning, and assessing progress towards professional, personal, and leadership goals.
  • Preparing and leading an hour-long end-of-fellowship webinar highlighting their Fellowship experience.
RAY Fellows will also attend:
  • A 3-day Orientation Retreat in August 2021.
  • A 3-day Mid-Fellowship Leadership Retreat in August 2022.
  • At least one other training or workshop with their RAY Fellow cohort.

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY

Eligible RAY Fellow applicants will:
  • Come from a racial / ethnic background underrepresented in conservation and clean energy and demonstrate a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Be no more than 1 year out of college and have a Bachelor's Degree by July 2021 (we are not considering individuals with graduate degrees at this time).
  • Have not had a full-time job in conservation or clean energy.
  • Have the ability to work in the United States and commit to the entire fellowship.
SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
  • A college degree by the time of employment
  • Excellent writing skills and an interest in the storytelling in the environmental field
  • Interest and/or experience in communicating ideas through a variety of visual and auditory mediums (including but not limited to podcasts and blogs)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines and work remotely.
  • Requires an understanding of, and a commitment to advancing the mission, core values, and learning organization principles of ELP.
  • Ability to connect with other people’s passions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Sense of humor required - no really it is.

TERM / LENGTH OF ASSIGNMENT

This is a two-year, full-time fellowship (one year with a one year renewal) starting on or after July 15, 2021.





COMPENSATION

The Fellowship is compensated and sponsored by ELP, who offers a competitive benefits package as well as training and professional development opportunities. The base compensation for this position is $43,000. ELP offers full medical and dental coverage, paid time off, and retirement benefits. More details to follow.
