Summer Internship in Optical Sensing

The Air Force Institute of Technology is offering undergraduate/post-bachelor's internships at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

What will I be doing?

You will engage with U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) faculty and staff in conducting research related to optical sensing using light-matter interactions.  Interns will be matched to specific projects based on their qualifications and career interests. Interns may participate in research in one of several technical areas including optical sensors and their design; algorithm development for exploitation of remotely sensed data; implementation of machine learning (ML) techniques to sensing applications; and laboratory experimentation using state-of-the-art lasers and detection systems.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a 12-week research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

You will receive a stipend to be determined by AFIT. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

Highly competitive applicants will have a solid academic background in a research area that aligns with at least one of those listed in the the above description. Fluency in engineering drawings is highly desired.

  • Degree: Bachelor's Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 5/21/2023 12:00:00 AM.
