Technical Design Manager

Reports To:    Director of Creative and Technical Design
Classification: W-2 Employee
Type:                Full Time/Exempt Position
Location:        In-office, non-remote

As the Technical Design Manager, you will be part of Bombshell Productions Creative and Technical Design Team. You will directly assist our Director of Creative & Technical Design in the evolution and successful execution of the Client’s vision while managing the technical design, particularly the development of clear and concise drawing and documentation to be used internally and externally. Bombshell is a highly collaborative environment in which you will play a key role in projects from conceptualization of ideas to development through pre-production, budgeting, execution and ultimately closure of the project.
 
Responsibilities:   
  • Realize client’s vision through creative and/or technical design by working collaboratively with other members of the Bombshell team
  • Participate in internal and external meetings with BP team and/or clients regarding specific project needs to ensure all creative and technical aspects of the mission have been addressed
  • Work with Project Managers to coordinate tasks, information and timelines with internal and external resources
  • Conduct site surveys offsite and possibly out-of-state including photos, dimension, onsite 3D modeling
  • Prepare and review Excel based budgets created by you and others taking into account mission needs for determining material needs and quantities, obtaining vendor and subcontractor bids, internal and overhire labor, and time requirements to meet the client needs and wants for cost and execution level
  • Create and review Word document estimates created by you and others for presentation to clients based on Excel budgets
  • Design proposals of conceptual design using Vectorworks, Adobe Suite, PowerPoint and/or other programs for internal and external presentation and proposals
  • Prepare and review internal technical design documents and drawings created by you and others for use by BP shop fabrication and onsite installation teams
  • Prepare and review external technical design documents and drawings for use by clients, venues, suppliers, vendors and/or subcontractors created by you and others
  • Materials and vendor specification, which may include gathering samples, negotiating prices, and/or material ordering and tracking
  • Adherence to, and development of, best practices for the design and/or fabrication of scenic elements
  • Close collaboration and consultation with the Director of Creative and Technical Design and the Director of Production and Fabrication about construction and development process of physical builds
  • Partner with the BP shop and external vendors/subcontractors to ensure that final product(s) are fabricated and/or installed to the design intent and specification
  • Hands-on work in scenic shop, carpentry, welding, painting, or other scenic construction as needed and qualified
  • Work with Project Managers to assemble Production Bibles for installation teams on specific projects as needed
  • Onsite assistance and/or lead for load in, show run, and/or load out as needed
  • Ability and willingness to travel
 
Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, Technical Production, Theatre Technology or related field
  • Minimum 5 years technical production experience
  • Experience in live theatre, events, or touring
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to interact with client on all levels

  • Experience with furniture fabrication, interior design or theatrical set construction
  • Understanding of general carpentry and power tool operations
  • Excellent understanding of common building practices, construction materials and fastening techniques
  • Skilled in the use of computers including Microsoft based programs (Teams, Excel, Outlook, Word, SharePoint, One Drive)
  • Ability to model, draft and render effectively with Vectorworks (3D preferred) or other CAD programs
  • General knowledge of A/V and lighting equipment is a plus
  • Travel may be required
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus
