Post Masters Research Associate - Building Energy Simulation Engineer
The Buildings & Connected Systems Group at PNNL is seeking a Post-Doctorate Research Associate with a focus on building energy simulation to support the development and use of PNNL’s large-scale building energy modeling infrastructure and associated analytical tools for research areas including:
- Residential and Commercial Prototype Building Models development in EnergyPlus and OpenStudio
- Development / Enhancement of the EnergyPlus and OpenStudio platforms and their associated tools
- National and regional building energy code upgrades, such as ASHRAE Standard 90.1, International Energy Conservation Code, ASHRAE Standard 189.1
- Energy impacts of building energy code compliance
- Resilience of building energy systems
- Grid-interactive efficient building design and controls
- Urban-scale building modeling for building-to-grid research
The term will be one year for position, at which point the candidate will be reviewed for potential conversion to a full-time employee.
Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.
- Graduate degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Sciences or related fields
- Solid background knowledge in building physics and building energy systems
- Experience in creating building energy simulation models in EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, or other similar software
- Strong programming skills in Python, Ruby, C++, R, or Perl
- Experience in developing building energy modeling software, such as EnergyPlus and OpenStudio
- Design or research experience in one or more of the building energy systems: building envelope, HVAC, lighting, controls, and service hot water.
- Experience working collaboratively with Git repository
- Development and implementation of containerized workflow for institutional high-performance computing or cloud computing
- Experience in conducting field or laboratory measurements of building energy systems and indoor environment parameters
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong research skills to support research projects
- A collaborative approach to problem-solving in areas that do not have clear or established solutions or outcomes and the ability to work well with inter-disciplinary and geographically distributed teams.
