Social Media Associate
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine are looking for a social media specialist. The ideal candidate will have experience working with internal stakeholders to translate content into engaging social media campaigns. They will have a passion for conceiving and executing communications programs and driving engagement across earned and paid media. They will enjoy monitoring trending topics and developing user-focused content. The ideal candidate will have experience in strategizing and implementing social media campaigns to increase brand awareness, bolster user traffic and interactions, and document the progress of engaging new audiences. A strong understanding of social media and audience behavior is a must.
This is a professional role, working under general supervision and functioning with the ability to deviate from subscribed courses of action as needed. It is not a clerical or administrative support role. This role is part of a social media team and reports to the Director.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Manage day-to-day activities on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Facebook
2. Plan, socialize and execute multiple campaigns across a range of issue areas with varying goals and target audiences
3. Coordinate with communications leads, the digital team, and news team to develop timely posts that engages target audiences
4. Maintain social media content calendars and project management software as part of the National Academies’ overall editorial process
5. Continuously optimize content and creative assets to meet institutional goals and campaign objectives
6. Ensure content is consistently reviewed, tagged, and published to support accurate measurement and insight collection
7. Monitor audience response and institutional reputation through social listening tools (such as Talkwalker), and regularly brief communications and crisis management teams of new developments
8. Assist in managing the digital success metrics reporting system for paid and social media
9. Analyze digital data including but not limited to: tagging, hashtagging, likes, following, commenting, etc.
10. Conduct post-campaign evaluation and reporting to read out on results highlighting strengths, potential weaknesses, and lessons learned
11. Proactively look for opportunities to communicate value and results of campaigns
12. Support staff across the National Academies in learning best practices and aligning with established policies.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to operate with appreciable latitude for independent judgment and action. Ability to solve problems of some variety and complexity. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to develop effective working relationships with co-workers, employees in other National Academies’ departments, and external customers. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.
- Fluency in major social platforms, digital analytics, social listening, and social campaign planning publishing platforms
- Proficient in strategic message creation and experience in increasing digital engagement from target audiences and key stakeholders
- Possess a “test and learn” mentality coupled with the desire to stay on top of industry best practices and trends
- Preference for working in collaborative teams
- Self-starter with intellectual curiosity, can-do attitude and strong work ethic who’s willing to dive in and help wherever needed
- Desire to continue strengthening digital communication skills through ongoing learning
- Undergraduate degree or significant coursework in digital and social media marketing and communications or closely related field
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Communications or related field, or equivalent knowledge.
Minimum Experience: One year of related professional experience.
Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to supervisor/manager. Sets objectives with supervisor.
Work Environment: Office environment, with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
