The City of Leawood, Kansas will be accepting applications for the Public Works Maintenance Worker I until October 4, 2021. 
The Public Works Maintenance Worker will be assigned to the Asphalt Crew.

The Public Works Maintenance Worker series is divided into 4 levels; Public Works Maintenance Worker I, Public Works Maintenance Worker II, Public Works Maintenance Worker III, and Public Works Maintenance IV. 
Starting rate of pay: $15.16- $17.78/ hour, DOQ
Summary/Objective
The Public Works Maintenance Worker I performs a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance and construction on City-owned facilities, roadways, and property. Responsibilities include maintenance of asphalt and concrete highways and streets, stormwater management, pavement striping and fabrication of traffic signs. Assists in emergency operations, including snow removal, flood response and other natural disasters. Public Works Maintenance Worker I operates various types of light to moderately heavy vehicles and equipment. 
 
Essential Functions / Responsibilities
  • Assists in the maintenance and construction of City-owned facilities, streets, roads, right-of-ways, and stormwater systems. Assists with trash removal, lawn debris and general clean-up of roadways, walkways and streets. 
  • Performs a variety of manual labor activities, including but not limited to hauling materials, restoring landscaping to its prior condition, excavating, removing pavement and curbing, and placing concrete and asphaltic materials. 
  • Assists in setting up work zone traffic signs and following safety protocols at work sites, walkways and roadways to assist in directing traffic safely around the site and ensure the safety of the workers. 
  • Follows necessary safety procedures and protocols when using City equipment. 
  • Ensures all division equipment and vehicles are in proper operating condition prior to use. Duties include but are not limited to adhering to maintenance schedules, checking oil supplies, changing blades and lubricating equipment. Notifies supervisor of unsafe equipment.
  • Employee will be required to assist with snow removal operations and other emergency activities which require occasionally working extended shifts, and after normal hours, including weekends and/or holidays. Typical emergency shifts are twelve hours.
  • Employee will have the opportunity to train with various crews and gain additional experience including but not limited to laying and repair of asphalt, concrete, storm water inspections, fabrication of traffic signs, pavement striping, and will serve as backup on alternate crews when needed.
  • Employee may be asked by the supervisor to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the job. 
  • Employee will be assigned to one of the following crews: 
 
Asphalt
  • May assist in the inspection of streets and properties for areas in need of asphalt repair. 
  • Assists in repairing asphalt streets, roadways and drainage ditches including but not limited to cracks, resurfacing, pothole repair and trench repair. 
  • Assists in asphalt milling of roadways and sidewalks to repair damaged areas and prepare for resurfacing. 
  • Assists with production, installation and retrieval of temporary No Parking signs under the direction of the Temporary No Parking Signs Administrator or Asphalt Supervisor. 
Concrete
  • May assist in the inspection of streets, walkways and curbs for areas in need of concrete repair.
  • Assists in repairing, replacing and maintaining concrete on walkways, sidewalks, curbs, storm water catch basins and ditch liners. 
  • Assists in the filling of cracks and potholes. 
  • Assists in the layout and application of payment markings on various roadways, crosswalks, parking lots, and fire lanes. 
  • May assist residents in maintenance repairs on properties including but not limited to sidewalks, painting and sprinkler repairs damaged by sidewalk replacement or snow damage. 
  • May assist in the fabrication, layout and installation of various traffic control (metal) signs including but not limited to stop signs, election signs, and speed limit signs. 
 
Stormwater
  • Assists in inspecting stormwater drainage and runoff basins for areas in need of repair. 
  • Assists in maintaining the City’s stormwater system including but not limited to removing debris from catch basins, storm drains and culvert pipes. 
  • Assists in the construction, installation and repair of storm pipes and drainage systems.
  • Assists in locating and marking underground utility and structure locates for stormwater.
 
 
Minimum Qualifications / Requirements
  • Ability to comprehend written material (i.e. instruction books); ability to comprehend directives.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and with the public.
  • Ability to protect and maintain confidentiality of information. 
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines with effective results.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand the English language with proper spelling and grammar to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to make decisions in the best interest of both the resident and the city. 
  • Ability to use safe work practices while on the job, including following proper and established procedures in the use of equipment, and wearing the appropriate and/or required safety and personal protective gear.
  • Ability to demonstrate mechanical aptitude for department equipment. 
  • Ability to demonstrate the proficient use of equipment required of the position. 
  • Standard office procedures, systems and practices including the use of a computer. 
  • Must be able to withstand exposure to noise from equipment, machines, and vehicles. 
  • Must have adequate environmental tolerance, including the ability to work in variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, storms, heat, cold and any other weather indigenous to the area. 
 
Education, Training, and Certification Requirements
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. 
  • One (1) year experience in public works or street construction, preferred.
  • Must acquire a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes and tanker endorsements or obtain within six months (6 months) of hire. 
  • Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holder, preferred. 
  • Must achieve flagger certification through IMSA, APWA or other approved credentialing entity within one (1) year of hire. 
  • Completion of NIMS requirements within one year of hire date.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
