The office of Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, Florida's only statewide elected Democrat, is seeking a Press Secretary to specialize in Hispanic media outreach. As a spokesperson for the Commissioner and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the candidate is a bilingual (Spanish language), multi-talented, enthusiastic communications/digital professional who excels at both taking initiative and working in a team in the public sector in a fast-paced office.

Reporting to the Communications Director and Deputy Chief of Staff and working alongside the Deputy Communications Director and Social Media Manager, a successful Press Secretary will have on-record experience, exceptionally strong writing skill in both English and Spanish, close attention to detail, a collaborative work ethic, and willingness to take on any task. Under the direction of the Communications Director, the Press Secretary will develop strategic plans and execute tactics for increasing engagement with Hispanic and specialty media outlets throughout the state.

Successful candidates are able to manage a significant volume of incoming media inquiries and public records requests, as well as outgoing pitches. Candidates must also quickly deliver a variety of written products including remarks, statements, talking points, press releases, and op-eds, as well as manage in-person and virtual media events including press conferences, Zoom meetings, and Facebook livestreams. Candidates may back up the Social Media Manager and therefore should have experience in shooting and editing video, basic graphic design, and social media management. Candidates will also assist in developing strategic communications plans, and coordinate information with senior staff and division leadership.

The Commissioner and Department are committed to a diverse, inclusive, equitable work environment and women, people of color, and LGBTQ candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. The position will be based in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale region and require travel as media events, interviews, and other public events that the Commissioner of Agriculture and other department personnel may be participating in necessitate. Employees may have the ability to telework due to COVID-19. Salary is competitive and excellent state benefits include health, vision, and dental insurance, paid leave, and professional development.

Candidates should send a resume, cover letter with salary expectations, and two writing samples in both English and Spanish to erin.moffet@fdacs.gov. The position is expected to begin in mid-November 2021.
