The Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) is recruiting for a Visual Information and Cartographer Specialist in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. We are seeking candidates to provide support of intelligence production and dissemination, use of technology to produce digital and print visual and cartographic products and interactive graphic content for I&A.

Responsibilities:
  • Design, layout, and produce a variety of materials for digital and print platforms and field products, including, but not limited to infographics, brochures, flyers, fact sheets, forms, booklets, signage, vector art, charts and diagrams, reports, web banners and PowerPoint presentations for leadership, internal/external partners and components.
  • Work as part of a team managing multiple mapping projects under minimal supervision, including define project requirements and provide advice on processes and procedures for optimal visual presentation.
  • Develop and maintain sufficient regional expertise to provide substantive input into the final map product, including geographic features, Board on Geographic Names (BGN) rulings, key issues, and recent developments.
  • Develop and incorporate graphics into reports, newsletters, other print and digital publications with an emphasis on responsiveness, timeliness and accuracy.
  • Advise, coordinate and provide guidance to leadership and customers to interpret work requests.
  • Provide consulting and expertise from a designer’s perspective to help develop strong, visually appealing products that reach appropriate audiences.
  •  Stay up to date with the latest visual communications/media trends, cartographic design technologies, tools and techniques.
  • Work closely with analysts to understand client needs and wants for products based on all information provided.
  • Help establish visual branding/standards as needed and collaborate with authors. 
  • Create and maintain a library of finished graphics and templates.
  • Collaborate with editors on tasks and guidance when producing products.
  • Work closely with analysts and senior leadership to conceptualize and then deliver maps that provide clear and novel insights for analytic products.
  • Apply principles and theories of cartography, graphic design, data visualization, color theory, layout and typography to implement map ideas that communicate effectively
  • Develop best practices and standards for intel and non-intel maps and finished production templates.
  • Assist in developing criteria and a follow-on process for evaluating whether a map is required for a product.
  • Mentor other cartographers and analysts in visualization theory and techniques.
  • Provide guidance on designing effective intelligence maps.
  • Coordinate closely with the many disciplines involved in production, including other cartographers, designers, publications officers, authors and leadership.
  • Proactively seek feedback from customers to improve the relevance, quality and timeliness of maps.
  • Recognize, value, build and leverage diverse collaborative networks with other cartographers across agencies.
  • Support special projects as needed
 
Qualifications: 
  • TS/SCI clearance (preferred);
  • Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s degree, or trade school degree in graphic design, cartography or a related field. A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position;
  • experience in graphic design and desktop publishing;
  • Proficient in the latest Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., primarily Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat) and presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint);
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software;
  • Strong critical thinking, verbal communication, attention to details and writing skills;
  • Ability to conceptualize and design products based on verbal/abstract client direction;
  • Knowledge of web and social media best practices for visuals (images and video);
  • Interpersonal, time management and organizational skills, ability to adapt quickly to changing needs/priorities;
  • Creative problem-solving skills and ability to provide leadership in carrying out mission responsibilities;
  • Demonstrated ability to produce maps for finished intelligence products;
  • Previous experience in leading conceptualization sessions and assisting authors in discerning whether a map is required, and if so, how to most effectively communicate the analytical story with a map;
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of a broad range of cartographic tools and approaches to present data, including Adobe Creative Suite (primarily Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat) and mapping software, such as ArcGIS, Avenza MaPublisher, HTML, Programming languages and Intergraph GeoMedia Pro;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and in a team;
  • Physical or digital portfolio is required at time of interview
