Manager, Communications, Data2X

Position Overview

Data2X is a technical and advocacy platform dedicated to improving the quality, availability, and use of gender data to make a practical difference in the lives of women and girls worldwide. Data2X works with UN agencies, governments, civil society, academics, and the private sector to close gender data gaps, promote expanded and unbiased gender data collection, and use gender data to improve policies, strategies, and decision-making.

The Communications Manager will report to the Director of Advocacy and Communications and will also work closely with the rest of the Advocacy & Communications team. The Communications Manager will be responsible for developing and managing content across all Data2X’s editorial and digital channels, as well as assisting with production and vendor management, event planning, and messaging support for advocacy engagement.

With support from the Communications and Advocacy Associate, the Communications Manager will raise the visibility of Data2X by supporting the development and leading the implementation of an online outreach strategy that will include the organization’s website, social media, and email channels. The Communications Manager will work with the Director of Advocacy and Communications in implementing and enforcing brand guidelines. Candidates who show an appreciation for Data2X’s commitment to strategic collaboration, to linking gender data and gender equality with other key development concerns, and to serving the most marginalized are strongly welcomed.

This position is based in Washington, D.C.

Essential Functions

Editorial Support—30% 
  • Manage vendors related to print, publications, and design, including managing the production process from conceptualization to dissemination
  • Draft compelling website site content and blog posts and assist with research and analysis for advocacy briefs and other written content as needed
  • Work with team members on the development of an editorial calendar
  • Copy and content edit Data2X’s public-facing documents—reports, official correspondence, and newsletters—as needed
  • Ensure consistent implementation of brand guidelines in partnership with the Director of Advocacy and Communications

Online Engagement—35%

  • Execute the digital strategy and track, monitor, and report on goals and the performance of all Data2X's online properties
  • Manage web vendors and oversee development of new sites, landing pages, web experiences, and other online platforms needed for programs
  • Coordinate outreach activities with coalition partners and build relationships with key organizations to advance Data2X's mission
  • Write and edit print and digital publications as needed
  • Contribute to strategic communications planning including campaigns and events
  • Serve as team leader on selected projects, which may include developing key messages, stories, event collateral, and other content
  • Contribute to event planning during major advocacy moments, such as the UN General Assembly, by booking venues, drafting speaker invitations and briefings, creating Eventbrite forms and maintaining associated registration lists, drafting talking points for Senior Leadership, and live-tweeting
  • Other duties as assigned      

Management—35%   
  • Supervise the Communications and Advocacy Associate

Selection Criteria
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • At least five years of full-time experience leading and/or implementing online strategy (web, email, social media)
  • Minimum of one year of managing at least one early career report
  • Proficiency with Google Analytics and Google Ads required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in search engine optimization
  • Proficiency with email metrics and list management
  • Familiarity with WordPress, MailChimp, and other content management systems
  • Strategic thinker committed to remaining on the cutting edge of online communications
  • Passion for social media and dedication to measurement-based performance
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, with an ability to write precisely and concisely for internal and external audiences
  • Motivated self-starter with ability to work independently
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy
  • Proficiency with Photoshop strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with AP style preferred
