Social Media Internship

Compensation: $15/hr
Time Commitment: 29 hours per week for 6 months (July 11th-December 30th)
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: Best Friends Animal Society is a national non-profit focused on ending the killing of cats and dogs in America's shelters by 2025. Best Friends is leading the no-kill movement by running lifesaving community programs for dogs and cats, providing support and training for animal shelters and rescue groups, and mobilizing community members on behalf of pets in need across the country. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Social media interns are creative and energetic members of a dedicated team focused on the growth, engagement and management of Best Friends’ social media communities (over two million animal lovers and rapidly growing). Interns will learn about and participate in day-to-day community building and cultivation across social channels, content development and posting, and collaboration to meet organizational business goals and provide meaningful engagement for animal lovers.
Social Media Interns report to the Manager of Social Communities and Content, and will receive weekly supervision and regular trainings on relevant career topics. The minimum time commitment for the Social Media Internship is 29 hours per week at $15.00 an hour for 6 months. This is a remote internship. Students seeking college credit are welcome to apply.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor specific hashtags and identify users who have the potential to be influential in spreading the Best Friends message
- Mine volunteer-run Facebook Groups and Pages as well as Tack for content to post on National social Pages, seek out permission from users to post
- Engage with Best Friends supporters across our social channels by responding to comments and direct messages to build and deepen relationships
- Help develop social media strategies and recurring posts for National social channels
- Research new and innovative ways to engage the Best Friends community across social platforms
- Create a plan to increase recruitment through various social channels
- Treat people around you with Kindness and Compassion, build trust by demonstrating authenticity and following through on your commitments, prioritize your well-being, and work to build strong inclusive relationships with your colleagues by participating in communication loops to share and receive honest feedback.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Learn how to prepare and implement a successful, comprehensive social media strategy that increases overall brand awareness and donations in the competitive social sphere
- Publish multiple pieces of content across Best Friends social channels
- Work with Best Friends corporate partnerships team to deliver a content proposal to a corporate partner
- Enhance customer service and troubleshooting skills
- Develop a deep understanding of Best Friends’ mission and the breadth of social communities that engage in issues central to the mission (both communities that are already part of the no-kill movement and those that are not)
- Gain a foundational understanding of strategy and publishing processes for Best Friends social media channels including reporting on campaign and post-performance
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Basic knowledge of top social channels: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat
- Creative writing skills
- Responsiveness
- Communication, tact/diplomacy
- Comfortable meeting and interacting with new people
- Some professional or volunteer experience managing social media channels preferred but not required
- Graphic design skills a plus, but not required
- Basic knowledge of, or willingness to learn Microsoft products, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
