2022-BWS-002-Water Operations Intern, Highlands

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Water Supply manages, operates, and protects New York City's upstate water supply system to ensure the delivery of a sufficient quantity of high quality drinking water. The Bureau is also responsible for the overall management and implementation of the provisions of the City's $1.5 billion Watershed Protection Program and for ensuring the City's compliance with the provisions of the Filtration Avoidance Determination.

The Water Operations Division plans, manages, operates, maintains and provides responsible stewardship to all NYC water supply reservoirs, dams, facilities, aqueducts, shafts, hydroelectric plants, highways, bridges and watershed lands of the Delaware, Catskill and Croton water systems upstream of the Kensico and New Croton reservoirs. Working within the Source Water Operations Division (SWO) in the Highlands Region, under direct supervision the selected candidate will primarily work with the Test Operations Section (TOS) on gathering data on the equipment used at various facilities to populate a more detailed equipment list than the current one. The intern will put the information into an Excel database that will be formatted for import into the current CMMS database being used by the region and be used for future CMMS databases when the change occurs. The intern will also provide support for the Highlands Survey Section, assisting them in the field when needed and in sorting and organizing their digital files to be more user friendly. At the end of their tenure, the intern will prepare and submit a report of what was accomplished and identify what further actions need to be completed and offer suggestions for improvement. The selected candidate(s) will be exposed to real-life engineering problems that will require an understanding of engineering fundamentals, engineering management reports, and projects schedules. Candidate will be responsible for adhering to and complying with all environmental, health and safety laws, Agency policies, rules, and regulations.
