2022-BWS-006-Community Planning Intern

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau is also responsible for the overall management and implementation of the provisions of the City's $1.5 billion Watershed Protection Program and for ensuring the City's compliance with the provisions of the Federal/State Filtration Avoidance Determination. The Bureau’s Watershed Lands and Community Planning Directorate works with state and local government officials, non-profit entities, and others to implement a suite of water quality improvement programs aimed at protecting source water and fostering good relations with program partners.

The Community Planning internship will assist the Community Planning Section with collecting and digitizing program data related to stormwater retrofit and septic repair programs. Specific responsibilities include interacting with program partners to collect data, compiling data into spreadsheets, and working with DEP GIS staff to create GIS layers with tables for use in DEP’s Watershed Lands Information System. The intern will also assist in the implementation of the City's EOH Septic Repair Reimbursement Program and other Community Planning projects as appropriate and assigned.
