Planning Intern

Summer Internship:
$12/hr

Position Summary: A temporary internship to introduce students/recent graduates to the basic operational functions of the Development & Neighborhood Services (DNS) Department related to planning, zoning, GIS, and engineering. Assisting the DNS Department with full range of researching records of development orders and creating a useable database for zoning applications, as well as shadowing staff on daily functions and operations applying planning and zoning regulations. The internship will provide an opportunity to bridge the gap between academics and the professional work environment as you develop the skills to navigate everyday work scenarios.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
(The duties listed are intended to serve as an example of the typical functions performed. They are not exclusive or all-inclusive and will vary with assignments.) 
  • Provide research and compilation of a development order database for the city to assist in the everyday review of zoning confirmations letters, permits, and development applications.
  • Assists in the review and issuance of plans and applications submitted for development, zoning, and building permits.
  • Assists staff in preparation for public hearings and community meetings and outreach events.
  • Assists with the collection of information, plans and documents needed for public records requests and zoning verification letters.
  • Performs administrative/office duties as required, including attending meetings, preparing reports and correspondence, copying, and filing documents, entering computer data, etc.
  • Performs all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisors, other department supervisors and employees, co-workers, other City personnel, external customers, and employees of other governmental agencies.
  • Ensure that all required documentation required by the college or university is supplied to the Department Internship Coordinator and completed prior to required deadlines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • To apply higher order thinking skills (critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, complex problem solving) to “real world” situations in the workforce.
  • To increase skills for understanding and working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures and to work effectively within diverse environments.
  • To further develop observation, recording and interpretation skills.
  • Learning how to build presentations — from storyboarding to design, copywriting, and rehearsing to communicate with residents. Learning effective and essential communication skills required in the workplace.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Organizational, oral, and written communication skills
  • Philosophies, principles, practices, and techniques of city planning as they pertain to the design and development of urban and regional areas, planning research, and zoning activities
  • Growth management legislation and comprehensive planning
  • Research methodology and of standard statistical procedures
  • Knowledge of GIS and CADD-related software and other mapping-related software is preferred.
Ability to:
  • Ability to read and interpret surveys, construction plans, maps, general planning-related data, and legal descriptions.
  • Assists the Development and Neighborhood Services team with research and policy development for Land Development Code, City Code and Comprehensive Plan updates and amendments
  • Work independently on complex and confidential assignments and to analyze a wide variety of data.
  • Maintain confidential and sensitive information demonstrating a high degree of professional integrity.
  • Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor.
  • Maintain high standards for professional and ethical conduct.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, public agencies, and the general public.

Education & Experience
  • Recently graduated or currently enrolled in an accredited College or University program working towards an Associates or a Bachelors degree Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Geography, Political Science, or a closely related field.

  • Must have graduated from an accredited high school, or have obtained a State of Florida G.E.D. certificate or equivalent.
  • Must submit to a post-offer background check. The offer of the internship will be conditioned based on the results of the background check.
