Field and CAD Technician - Grand Rapids, MI
Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking an exceptional Field and CAD Technician to join our team in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

A Technician plays a key role in helping project teams deliver high quality field assessments, execute field-performed testing, and create accurate construction documents, efficiently and within budget, all while meeting the demands of a fast-paced work environment.
Responsibilities:
- Travel to project work sites to provide support in the field, including data retrieval and verification, on-site field-performed testing of built assemblies, and participating in field assessments and investigations with project staff
- Produce high-quality, accurate construction documents for the repair and rehabilitation of various building and infrastructure systems, including structural, facades and cladding, and roofing and waterproofing systems
- Develop preliminary and final drawings using the information derived from existing construction documents, backgrounds and/or rough layouts, and with assistance from the project team through field notes, sketches, or verbal instructions
- Provide input and assist with updating and maintaining local and company-wide CAD standards and detail library
- Assist project staff with the preparation of high-quality written deliverables, such as site visit reports and investigative assessments. Maintain high levels of efficiency and productivity to consistently deliver project on schedule and within budget
Requirements:
- Two or more years of relevant construction experience and CAD expertise, with demonstrated proficiency using Autodesk’s AutoCAD Architecture software required
- Associate's degree in construction technology, drafting technology, or computer-aided design and drafting (Certification with equivalent experience will be considered in place of a degree)
- Preferably skilled with hands, experienced with carpentry and power tools, ability to adapt and construct testing chambers with assistance from project staff. Ability to use progressive design software such as Autodesk Revit Architecture and Google SketchUp is preferred, with the desire and willingness to achieve proficiency
- Current knowledge of industry design and drafting standards
- Knowledgeable/Skilled with ancillary software such as Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, and Bluebeam
- Self-starter, driven with the enthusiasm for producing high quality, accurate deliverables efficiently, and within budget
- Energy and Enthusiasm: Consistently maintains high levels of activity and productivity; Candidate must be able to sustain extended working hours when necessary, or perform actions beyond their normal responsibilities, while maintaining effectiveness and a positive attitude in a team structure
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous and detail-oriented to ensure the production of a quality final work product
- Communication: Maintain effective communication during project development with project team and clients
- Assumes Responsibility: Must be able to accept constructive criticism of work product and correct problems proactively

- This position requires visual acuity and listening ability along with the ability to read and write
- Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office equipment such as a computer, printer, fax, copier, telephone, voice mail system, and other office equipment
- Position requires the ability to remain for extended periods at a workstation, as well as the ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to attend meetings at the various office, field, and construction sites
- Ability to perform inspections of buildings and other structures, both visually and with instruments
- Ability to read construction drawings, diagrams, printed materials, and computer screens
- Ability to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.
- Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction hazard
