Grounds Supervisor & Horticultural Education Specialist

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Associate Director, Facilities & Grounds, the Grounds Supervisor & Horticultural Education Specialist accomplishes objectives of the Grounds department through the administration and management of grounds functions. This role provides direct supervision to the Grounds personnel and grounds volunteers, provides grounds and gardens based programming and education workshops, and assists the completing of grounds maintenance as required.
Responsibilities include:
  • Responsible for the administration and management of grounds functions under the direction of the Associate Director, Facilities & Grounds. Ensures that the campus grounds are attractive and well-kept by planning work assignments and actively supervising the quality of groundskeeping services. Utilizes pertinent management reports to schedule, evaluate, and improve plant health and general landscape appearance. Organizes, monitors, and inspects special grounds projects to evaluate progress and ensure project quality. Generates and responds to emails and work orders via online work order system. Updates work orders in Facilities Dude at least once per day regarding progress or completion of work order assignments. Assists as needed in reviewing project costing, monitoring supplies inventory and maintenance, and makes recommendations for long-range planning of grounds preventative maintenance.
  • Assures established standards are achieved by regularly inspecting the work of grounds personnel, directing corrective measures to be taken when necessary and appropriate, and conducting and coordinating the training of groundskeepers in the safe and proper operation of all tools and equipment. Maintains a safe and healthy work environment by establishing and enforcing work policies. Perform personnel-related activities, such as monitoring and approving leave usage of groundskeepers, hiring staff, evaluating staff performance, and taking disciplinary actions when performance problems occur. Recommend changes in working conditions or equipment use to increase department efficiency.
  • As a working supervisor, the incumbent assists as needed with grounds projects and grounds maintenance. May cover areas of responsibility for other grounds staff. Drives golf carts to traverse the 66 acre campus to deliver supplies and carry equipment. Responds to and assists with emergency grounds needs.
  • Serves as point of contact for gardens' volunteers, community service workers, and interns. Supervises work performed in the gardens and provides assistance in the proper care of trees, shrubs, ground covers, and plants.
  • Serves as the subject matter expert on the campus grounds and gardens. Collaborates interdepartmentally to develop programming and promote gardens and grounds. Participates in community outreach initiatives to cultivate relations, increase awareness of the gardens, and increase volunteer support from outside groups such as local garden clubs, universities, and horticulture facilities. Provides gardens and grounds based programming and educational workshops. Answers visitor questions regarding the gardens. Develops signage for the gardens.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience, or a high school diploma or equivalent and experience equal to six years. (Note: post-high school education may substitute at the comparable rate).
  • Ability to perform groundskeeping work to include the transplanting, cultivation, pruning, and trimming of plants, shrubs, and trees.
  • Ability to train and supervise employees.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge of and ability to identify safety hazards and necessary safety precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements as determined by position to include lifting/moving objects up to 50lbs. working with chemicals, working in extreme weather conditions, and standing and walking for extended periods.

Anticipated Salary Range

The anticipated salary range will start at $40,000 and a final offer will be based on the education, skills, and experience of the selected candidate. Find out more about our benefits under the "FSU Total Rewards" section.

Schedule

While the primary working hours for this position are between 6:30 AM and 3:00 PM (with a 30 minute meal period) Monday through Friday, the incumbent may be required to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and special events.

Criminal Background Check

This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check, to include fingerprinting. The background check will be conducted as authorized and in accordance with University Policy 4-OP-C-7-B11.
