HHS Women's Health Communications and Digital Media Fellowship

HHS Office and LocationA fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Office on Women’s Health (OWH), Office of The Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), Office of the Secretary (OS), in the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), located in Washington, DC. 

The mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans, by providing for effective health and human services and by fostering sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health, and social services.

OWH is charged with providing expert advice and consultation to the Secretary on scientific, legal, ethical, and policy issues, and serving as a coordination point throughout HHS on issues affecting the health of women and girls. OWH establishes short and long-term goals within the Department for research, disease prevention and health promotion, service delivery, and education for public health and health care professionals surrounding women and girls’ health. OWH identifies needs and monitors activities within the Department that contribute to women and girls’ health and through leadership of the Coordinating Committee on Women’s Health. Additionally, OWH is responsible for facilitating the exchange of information through the National Women’s Health Information Center and promoting women and girls’ health programs and policies, all aimed at improving the health of women and girls.

Within OWH, the Division of Strategic Communications (DSC) communicates evidence-based women’s health information with OWH programs and projects externally, for instance, through web content, press releases, blogs, social media, and speeches/interviews. 

Research Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will be involved with planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating a strategic communications and outreach plan for public health.

Learning Objectives
  • Plan and develop various communication science and marketing campaigns to disseminate information about the organizations programs
  • Apply a variety of communication methods and techniques to market and promote activities through the use of all available digital/social media platforms
  • Translate scientific content for public health communications use and application
  • Develop and assess messaging, resources and tools for various audiences
  • Plan, organize, and manage communication activities, projects and initiatives
  • Initiate and/or participate in evaluation efforts and studies to develop and implement public health communication products for a broad or at-risk audience.
  • Develop campaign materials including fact sheets, news releases, feature articles for magazines and trade papers, radio and television scripts, motion pictures, personal appearances, new conferences, exhibits, brochures, pamphlets, and other materials.
  • Evaluate campaigns for behavior change impact.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. Participants do not become employees of HHS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).
