Public Works/ Engineering Internship

The Town of Miami Lakes (population 30,000) is seeking an intern to support the Town’s Public Works Department.
 
The primary focus of the Public Works Intern will be to provide technical and/or administrative assistance to the Town’s Public Works Department. This may include assistance with the management of the stormwater utility, roadway and drainage improvement projects, sidewalk inspection and repair projects, traffic engineering, and other related public works projects or activities. Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment; however, some work may take place outdoors when inspecting projects. Must have a valid Florida driver’s license.  
 
Learning outcomes: The intern will work alongside engineering and support staff in developing strategies related to compliance and regulatory requirements, dealing with the public, reporting, budgeting, cost estimating, and being part of a team.
 
Requirements:
  •  Enrollment at a local university in an ABET accredited undergraduate (junior or senior year student) or graduate program.
  • Student majoring in Civil Engineering or closely related engineering field, preferred.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to problem-solve and to complete projects within specified timeframes.
  • Ability to work 20-25 hours per week, as needed.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of engineering.
  • Background in civil engineering, surveying, and construction is desirable.
  • Fundamental knowledge of stormwater operations is desirable.
