Fall 2022 DoD Internship

Organization Summary:

The University of South Florida (USF) Institute of Applied Engineering (IAE) provides agile, best-value engineering solutions to enhance the performance, effectiveness, and safety of its sponsors, including the Department of Defense; other federal, state, and local agencies; and industry. These engineering solutions include hardware-and-software-based applied research, advanced technology development, prototypes, and technical services.

Established in 1991, the Special Operations Forces Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics (SOF AT&L) Center is responsible for all USSOCOM research, development, acquisition, procurement, and logistics. SOF AT&L works closely with government, academia, and industry in meeting its mission to provide rapid and focused acquisition, technology, and logistics support to Warfighters, delivering the most effective capabilities to our Special Operations Forces. The Science and Technology Directorate (located within SOF AT&L) discovers, enables, and transitions technologies to provide an asymmetric advantage for Special Operations Forces.

Job Description:

SOF AT&L is looking to fill select positions for interns that will directly support DoD Organization accelerating the development, procurement, and integration of commercially derived technologies to address current and future challenges.

Time commitment:
o Hours of operation are 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday thru Friday
o Position requires a minimum of 15 hours per week and a maximum of 30 hours per week
during the Summer. A minimum of 15 hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours per week during Fall and Spring semesters.

Roles & Responsibilities:
Several internship positions are available for Summer 2022 for Business, Finance, and the following disciplinary Engineering areas:

Mechanical Engineering Intern
Assist in mechanical design of various projects, working closely with a team on multidisciplinary engineering problems

Physics/Aerospace Engineering Intern
o Work with team to design, prototype, and test aerospace equipment
o Assist with conducting research on related technology-focused topics
o Consult and engage with subject matter experts

Information Technology/Systems Administration Intern
o Work with a team to design, prototype, and test various software and hardware systems
o Assist with conducting research on related technology-focused topics
o Consult and engage with subject matter experts
o Experience in Web Development
o Certificates in information systems or IT, preferred certifications include CISSP, ISACA: CISM, EC-
Council: CEH, ISACA: CRISC and ISC2: CCSP
o Assist with User & Systems infrastructure administration configuration & customization

Computer Science Intern
o Work with team to design, prototype, and test various software and hardware systems
o Assist with conducting research on related technology-focused topics
o Experience with Microsoft 365, Azure, or AWS cloud
o Consult and engage with subject matter experts

Electrical Engineering Intern
o Work with team to design, prototype, and test electrical circuits, conduct research related to
technology topics, and consult with subject matter experts
o Must be able to work independently or as a member of a team on assigned technology related
topics

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:
o Performs entry-level research administrative support or technical assignments associated
conducting research on technology-related topics, contracts or grant-funded sponsored projects
o Must be able to work independently or as a member of a team on assigned technology
related topics
o Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
o Requires High School diploma or equivalent and 1 year of experience
o Higher education may substitute for the experience
o MUST BE ELIGIBLE FOR A U.S. SECURITY CLEARANCE.

Preferred Qualifications:
o Some positions at IAE may require a security clearance. Eligibility for a security clearance
includes being a US citizen
o Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in all areas of Engineering, Business, Finance, or similar
o Junior or Senior level, with a current GPA of 3.0 or above
o Good planning and organizational skills
o Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
o Experience working with a variety of engineering students
o Must be willing and able to work in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment
o A high level of integrity, accuracy, dependability, enthusiasm, and confidentiality
o Strong background in skillset needed for the Engineering or Business industries (certificates,
soft and technical skills) preferred
