The mission of the Forsyth Farmers' Market (FFM) is to promote understanding and participation in a local food system that supports sustainable production and increases access to local products. Started in 2009, FFM was conceived and planned to provide all members of Savannah’s community a welcoming, inclusive place to purchase local food and address food access issues. FFM was one of the first farmers’ markets in the country to accept SNAP benefits and one of the first in Georgia to double SNAP benefits. To increase food access, FFM began the Farm Truck 912 program which is a mobile farmers’ market that brings fresh, healthy food to low-income neighborhoods which would otherwise have limited access and provides nutrition education in various forms. Like the Saturday market, Farm Truck 912 doubles SNAP benefits. In 2020, FFM launched 912 Food Farmacy, a produce prescription program that addresses diet-related chronic disease through health education and offering financial incentives for healthy foods. This is an important year for the fundraising as the initial funding for this program expires. The AmeriCorps VISTA will gain a full understanding of a local food system from farmers to consumers. They will increase food access for the community’s most vulnerable populations while partnering with local farmers and other food producers. They will have an opportunity to be a member of the FFM community of farmers, volunteers, shoppers and program participants. The VISTA will be a part of initiatives that raise funds, promote the organization, and mobilize volunteers. At the end of the service year, the VISTA will have developed skills in grant writing, fundraising, volunteer management, event management, social media, marketing, networking, and promotion. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in a career in nonprofits, public health, farmer services, other paths centering around food, nutrition, and agriculture.

Member Duties : The Program and Development VISTA will build capacity for all FFM programming: the Saturday farmers’ market, Farm Truck 912, and 912 Food Farmacy with a focus on the latter two. Each program plays a role in growing the local food system and addressing poverty-related and food access challenges. Some of the key activities this year will be raising funds through our end of the year campaign, stewardship, two events, and grant-writing. We have started to really grow our volunteer program and the next VISTA will be taking our volunteer management and appreciation to the next level. Promoting the organization and our programs will allow the VISTA to be creative while refining social media and writing skills.
