CIVIL ENGINEER - ALL LEVELS

The Civil Design Engineer serves as project manager on Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) projects! Day to day, you will use your knowledge and technical skills to oversee engineering projects for the City of Newport News to include the full life cycle of civil design activities on storm water, roadway, and bridge design. The Civil Design Engineer handles a wide scope of responsibilities, and must be able to handle multiple projects at once. The City’s goal is to reduce pollutants, increase functionality, and enhance designs and foster improvements for the City. Due to the nature of the geographical area and the many types of infrastructures, it is important to ensure we are doing our part to protect the environment and watershed. The City is looking to add to all levels of Civil Design Engineer to our Engineering department. These dynamic positions range in responsibility from assisting with various projects to serving as project manager. There are project staff supervision opportunities as well. Frequent communication is required with any number of stakeholders to address changes in plans designs or negotiations. In addition to your daily tasks, you may also oversee your project staff to include assigning of work, performance management, employee relations, and other aspects that come into play when managing a team! Reporting is a very important piece of this position to be able to track project status and update stakeholders like City Council on various studies and possible improvements needed within the City. Salary Qualifications Engineer I $49k - $85k Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. EIT preferred.

Engineer II $56k - $96k Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and 1-3 years’ experience (including project management experience), or an equivalent combination or education and experience. EIT preferred.

Engineer III $63k - $109k Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and 3-5 years’ experience (including project management lead/supervisory experience), or an equivalent combination of education and experience. EIT or approved equivalency from Commonwealth of Virginia required.
